To Be Of Use Passage Analysis
The common theme of the two passages is being satisfied with yourself when you do something useful. We see the theme in the first passage when the narrator clearly states that he is satisfied with himself. The narrator in the first passage says, “ When I was done, I stood leaning on my shovel for a moment, looking with satisfaction down the long path that stretched to the corner.” This is clear evidence of the theme in this story. In passage two the theme is also easily recognized. The title “To be of use” , is clear evidence that the theme of the story is being of use, which is very similar to the theme of the first passage.

A lesson that both of these passages can teach is that you are obligated to be of use , and that once you are of

The Sailor’s Delight was a dreary, dismal and seedy bar on the edge of downtown Galveston and close to The Strand, a collection of small tourist shops, good and bad restaurants, and shops for Aunt Milly and Uncle Bob. Close to Broadway are several old and historic wooden houses that are over priced and recently remodeled, and all are painted in pastel shades with chalk white trim. Filippo owned a rather large house on a comer, and it is unique for it has a couple of large trees, and they are the only trees on the block The house was recently painted a pale orange, the choice of Filippo’s current flame because she liked the way it complimented her natural auburn hair.…

Even though Aileen only uses page numbers to indicate the passage, her selection of passage is pretty clear as soon as she starts the discussion. The most important technique/quality which Aileen used to maker her writing consistent with an academic ethos is time. Several times audience lose their trust on the writer if they are not at the same pace as the writer. However, Aileen takes her time to bring her audience to the same pace. She picks individual points from the passage and takes her time to explain them providing examples which consolidate her ideas. At the Gym, written by Mark Doty; has no relation with being at the gym at all; metaphorically speaking it pertains to attending church. The narrative provided is from the author's observation of other people in the church. The primary metaphor of this poem is religiously based in the sense people have determination to release their burdens with the desire of overcoming tribulations through prayer. Many smaller metaphors inside the poem leading the reader to believe there is faith veiled throughout. This metaphor is explained in this essay by many other small metaphors; Salt-stain is really tears, the vinyl is from the pews/benches in the church. How this metaphor references something manmade, the association of grief emotions in this poem such as hopelessness and despair. While more positive emotions of relief and hope are set forth; leading one to happiness. Many hidden religious aspects contained throughout the poem are brought to light.…

The first theme is the power of words. "In years to come he would be a giver of bread, not a stealer proof again of the contradictory human being. So much good, so much evil. Just add water"(pg.171) This goes with the theme because the words in this little paragraph make you think about how Hans Hubberman could be, not just Hans but maybe people in general. People could be really mean at one time and steal. Just add water and they are a bright sunshine that likes to help and be nice. That is how I interpret this quote. Also another quote on the power of words is "I've seen so many young men over the years who think they're running at other young men. They are not. They're running at me."(pg182) The quote relates to the theme because when you really think about that quote its true. People think they are just running at other people or objects but sometimes they aren't. Sometimes they are running at death or maybe partial death and they have no idea.…

“This town is so severe. And silent. It makes me crazy, the silence. I wonder if a person can die from it. The town office building has a giant filing cabinet full of death certificates that say choked to death on his own anger or suffocated from unexpressed feelings of unhappiness. Silentium. People here just can’t wait to die, it seems. It’s the main event. The only reason we’re not all snuffed at birth is because that would reduce our suffering by a lifetime. My guidance counselor has suggested to me that I change my attitude about this place and learn to love it. But I do, I told her. Oh, that’s rich, she said. That’s rich.”…

Many authors succeed in trying to illustrate their writing and reveal information in the way they write but they don’t say it directly. Some authors succeed by using literary devices and good diction. Shakespeare confirms Juliet’s anxiousness and immaturity by using poetic language such as hyperboles, similes, and allusions.…
