Auction sales at Government Forest Depots in Gujarat and Central India are continuing and price trends for teak have been reported as firm, this also applies to other hardwood logs. In the recent sales the ratio of teak to other hardwoods has been 80: 20. Pre-monsoon stock building drives up prices of imported teak Supplies of plantation teak from Ghana and Ivory Coast have been erratic recently but Central and South American supplies have been steady and have continued to support the demand in Mumbai, Kandla and Mangalore. Forward contract levels are also reportedly good and supplies will be maintained in the weeks to come. Premonsoon stock building by sawmillers is keeping prices firm.

Kraft Market pulp is a truly global commodity, which prices changing quickly in response to capacity changes, inventory levels, and purchase levels. While market pulp is produced in about 25 countries, historically more than two-thirds of world output has come from five northern countries : the United States, Canada, Sweden, Finland, and Norway. One major change in the global pulp market was the mid – 1990s launch of pulp futures markets . While these markets were not an immediate success, there was enough trading volume to sustain at least market, the Pulpex/Finish Options Exchange. It was hoped that futures markets, widely used to trade futures in commodity products – such as copper, aluminium, sugar, and coffee – would bring more price stability to the pulp market and even out some of the extreme price fluctuations that have plagued the global market…

During the Napoleonic Wars, Britain hoped that the dockyards in India constructed warships and India became the source of timber for the navy. In 1804, Lord Melville promoted the construction of warships in the dockyard of the East India Company at Bombay by using Indian woods. The navy considered Indian teaks as suitable for building ships and planned to use teak in Cochin. However, there were not sufficient teak forests in the areas where British could approach easily. In 1806, the Navy Board reported the difficulty in securing sufficient number of large teak. Although the navy desired that India contribute to the growth of British naval power, the import of Indian timber and the construction of ships for the navy were scarce in the Napoleonic Wars. Bombay had prospered as the centre for the construction of warships made with Indian teak since…
