Tiboelectric Series Lab (Fleur Vande Kerckhove 9A)
Tiboelectric Series Lab Fleur Vande Kerckhove 9A
Purpose/Aim:
How do the triboelectric series from different materials classify themselves due to their affinity (gaining or losing) when being measured by a gold leaf electroscope?
Hypothesis:
If the materials change (from: wool, rabbit fur, cotton, aluminum, nylon, amber, celluloid, silver, silicon and acrylic) to classify their affinity of their triboelectric series then rabbit fur will have a higher affinity compared to the rest of the materials. By rubbing an object against another object, there is a process of charging an object due to friction. When these two different materials are rubbed together, one material’s surface will technically remove some electrons from the surface of the other

In order to keep the experiment testable and fair it is important that the time that the material is being rubbed on the appropriate material (of the trial) is controlled. If the time that the each material is being rubbed on differs from each other, the results at the end of the experiment will not be truly valid and testable for a valid conclusion. To control the amount of time the material is being rubbed on the appropriate material, there will be a timer set that goes up to one minute. As the timer starts, the rubbing starts on both materials (against each other). When the timer ends after exact one minute, no movement of rubbing on the both materials should be detected at …show more content…
It is important that with every material that is being tested (10 in total) maintains the same amount of trials. Every material has ten materials to rub with (see trial chart on pages 9-13). If this variable is not controlled and materials don’t get rubbed with every material then the data table (see sample on page…) will be uncompleted and unsuccessful with invalid and unfair data. In order to keep this variable controlled every material is going to be rubbed by all of the materials that are going to be tested (see trial chart on pages 9-13). During this experiment, this trial chart must be

As stated previously the purpose of this experiment was primarily based on about chemical changes. Many chemical changes are viewed through a screen, or read from a book. In this experiment, chemical changes are viewed directly from the eyes of the scientist. The procedure first begins by gathering all needed materials. Next, laying the first powder on four wells, followed by the next powders, each powder was placed on four wells. The liquids were then placed on each powder using the four droppers. Three drops of each liquids were placed on each powder. After observing the chemical reactions, and recording data the powders were then identified.…

My hypothesis for this Experiment is that a mineral is able to scratch a mineral with a lower number and can, therefore be scratched by a mineral with a higher number. A mineral's density is the amount of matter in a given space (mass/volume). Each mineral has a characteristic density (density does not vary with the size of the mineral). I found out that A fngernail will scratch Talc and Gypsum, A penny will scratch Calcite and Fluorite, A file will scratch Quartz, and Glass, Knife blade, or Nail wll scratch Apatite.…

With experiment one I took a piece of sandpaper and rubbed my finger across it a couple of times. The texture was about a 5 on a scale from 1 to 7 being very course. I could feel the bumps on my fingertip as my finger went across the sandpaper which made me ignored about the sensation. It also felt as though my finger was still on the sandpaper after I had it off of it. After waiting two minutes I then re did the same experiment by rubbing the same finger across the sandpaper again. At this time my brain was saying the sensation was the same but my finger was use to the coarseness so it did not feel as bad this time. So I then rated the second time at a 3. Although this time when I released my finger the sensation stayed longer.…
