The reality of being unable to achieve his dreams burdens Walter and eventually changes him into a greedy, selfish and cowardly young man who makes poor decisions and hurts those who love him. Walter’s obsession with money has caused his family a lot of trouble, especially when it comes to the discussion of the $10,000 insurance money they receive. He belittles Beneatha’s dreams of becoming a doctor and says, “Ain’t many girls who decide to be a doctor”(36). Walter even claims that spending money on Beneatha’s education is a waste, and that he and Ruth would have been richer and happier if Beneatha dropped school. Not only does he put down Beneatha’s dreams, he also selfishly wants all of the insurance money so that he can open a liquor store to make his own dream of being rich and successful come true. Ruth thought Walter was a dreamer and tells him to “eat your eggs” (34) every time he brings up his dreams. When he realizes that he none of his family supports his desire to opening a liquor store, he becomes a bitter and cowardly man. James Thurber’s “Footnote on the future” is a first person limited narrative written as an account of the author on the topic of science and the future. The piece is written with the aim of entertaining the reader; many elements in it – comedy, colloquial and conversatonal language, irony, personification and unusual imagery - reflect this unified effect. It is important to remember that although the author criticises scientists, himself and the human race in general, he does so weakly and in an amicable and comical way.…

by Quentin Reynolds Text Analysis The text is included in belle-letters as it doesn’t follow a rigid structure, terminological lexemes or other norms imposed by functional styles. It belongs to emotive prose as the author uses the language of fiction and directs his work to the achievement of aesthetic and cognitive function. So, the narrative code is present here and the work itself is a short story: •Short - Can usually be read in one setting (it presents a general picture of Pierre Dupin’s life; some characters ― Pierre Dupin, horse Joseph, Jacques, episodic: president, driver, doctor; it has small proportions: about 1025 words); •Concise: Information offered in the story is relevant to the tale being told (the narrator don’t escape from the main plot); •Usually tries to leave behind a single impression or effect (The story is built around one character ― Pierre Dupin, place ― Montreal, idea ― a good work is achieved by those who really find common ground); Going deeper to the pre-textual level, we can detect: the title constitutes a nominal syntagm which is compound from a secret – a noun, and for two – a numeral (it requests two people). Usually, a secret is kept by a single person but here we have a secret shared by two. Secret - something that should remain hidden from others (especially information that is not to be passed on), and it requests info, information - a message received and understood, and confidence - a secret that is confided or entrusted to another. The syntagm deals with human reality and it implies the consciousness and the spiritual sphere of human being. The title follows the orientative function: it gives general impressions about what will happen and what we should discover, it gives hidden hints; the informative function: we should find out something, the text tells something about two person; the pragmatic function: it rises reader’s interest as a secret usually…

The fable “The Rabbits Who Cause All the Trouble” written by James Thurber is very deceiving in ways that the rabbits and wolves were given unique personality traits that are not usually associated with these animals. For example the wolves being scared of other animals and feared, their ability to lie to other animals to create a hatred for rabbits and their ways of being very clever are very unusual for these animals. The rabbits were also quite deceiving in that they had a desire to run away to a desert island and the ability to create such horrific behaviors.…

Though the personal narratives written by Beller and Thurber were fairly short, they still revealed a lot about themselves, which essentially affected the experience of the reader. Through Thurber’s words, the reader gets a sense of who he was during his “University Days” by his many stories of the classes he claims he didn’t like. Beller on the other hand, reveals himself by his sense of style and description of the different unimportant articles of clothing. Both Beller and Thurber however use anecdotes to draw the reader in so there is a possibility of a connection, thus altering the reader’s experience from what it would be like for them to just explain their point very dully.…

    Daydreamer

Daydreaming is often neglected in the study of real dreams. Most people don’t consider daydreaming as a type of actual dreaming. Everyday, or almost every hour, I daydream about something, like future plans, reminiscences about the past, or non-sense images. I think daydreaming maybe applicable just as nightly dreams. Often, when I think things in my head, I attempt to add a bit of unrealistic and fantasy dreams at the end. I never realized daydreaming is actually a problem for me until I realized that I daydream so much that sometimes I believe in those daydreams. Some people call daydreaming an action of laziness and a non-productive pastime, but I call it, the vision of fantasy dreams that you have not yet achieved in your life.…
