Thomson's Argument Analysis

A problem with Thomson’s argument is why others should have to admit to the fact that a woman has no more obligation to her own child than she has to a violinist that she has never met before and doesn’t even know? Therefore, she is saying that the mother doesn’t have a commitment to her child that has yet to be born than she does to people whom she doesn’t know, especially in the case where the mother has been raped. Another problem that Thomson states in her piece of writing is that if own possessions then you have the right to it. Hence, no one has the right to the possession unless you were to give it to them. In Thomson’s analogy, the violinist is sick, but in the case of an abortion the fetus is not sick. If the fetus were to be removed it would die and according to Thomson it is considered death when something is taken out of its environment it’s the ordinary means for sustaining their life. In
Although the mother is going through an unfortunate circumstance right now, she is still responsible for carrying out the pregnancy. The woman then has the option to choose whether or not she wants to keep the baby or to give it up for adoption. Also, life is very precious and not something that we can just choose to end for someone else when we are wanting to so we can carry on with our lives like nothing has never happened. Currently, I believe that many people stand behind the belief that the woman has the right to choose whether she wants to abort the baby or not since it is her body. Therefore, many think that the woman is not morally permissible to having and/or keeping the baby. After reviewing the argument I believe that for many people they take the stance that the woman should be able opt out of having the baby and choose the option of abortion if that is what they are
