Think You Won By Getting Rid Of Me When You Lost The Day You Let Me Go Analysis
The poem,¨You Think You Won By Getting Rid Of Me, When In fact You Lost The day You let me Go¨ by Mandie Michelle Sanders is about a girl who found out that her boyfriend had cheated on her. The poet uses what looks to be a free verse poem. It doesn't really have a rhyme scheme. The message that the writer put out is that dating can be dangerous and heartbreaking. Even the most trustworthy people could break your heart in an instant. People have to be careful about who they trust.

In the middle of the poem, the poet talks about how they felt like they are not good enough. She said that she felt like she was vomited on and spit on. She knows that she did nothing wrong, but because of this person, she has this feeling of failure and being

    The role of the speaker verses the author is necessary to understand in any poem, along with the way it sounds and reads. In this poem, the author and speaker are separate. The speaker seems to be that little voice in someone’s head, making the anxiety and stress worse. It is a man verses man scenario. Someone who is taking an exam is flustered over what success they will have and the speaker is telling him/her that they will most definitely fail. “You will never graduate / from this dream / of blue books” (Pastan, 1-3). The tone Linda Pastan uses is also very condescending, giving the poem more of a punch. It is written in Middle Speech, making it more relatable to readers who have been through the same thing instead of making the speaker sound too distant or too close. Another major thing in the poem that has to do with sounds is the way the lines are paused. One line will be stopped and then another line enjambed. The lines go back and forth and this is a constant pattern throughout almost the entire thing. This seems to represent the uncertainty of the test taker as to whether they will pass or fail.…

    This stanza is where you see the disaster, that she has been convincing herself does not exist, can be found. It is different from the rest of the stanzas, showing how this loss is different from the rest. The addition of the word ‘even’ in the line “—Even losing you…(16)” adds emphasis to the line which is unlike the tone in the rest of the poem. It shows not only how this loss is different from anything else but how broken the persona feels. The line has a gentleness towards it when said, showing not only how much she still loves this person but how devastating the death of this person was.
