Thesius Problem
a. The Ship of Thesius problem is a problem that is related to the identity through time branch of metaphysics. The problem goes like this: the ship of Thesius was being stored and preserved in Athens and one day a plank got rotten and began to crumble away the plank was then replaced with a new stronger plank. At this point there is no doubt that the ship even with the new plank is still the ship of Thesius. However, over time more planks rot away and are replaced until some years later there are only the new plan ks and none of the old are left. Is this still the ship of Thesius? A universal is a quality or property that is shared by several things. The best theory regarding universals in my opinion is conceptualism. Conceptualism is a philosophical theory that explains universality of particulars as concepts just in the mind but not in reality. Conceptualism attempts to occupy a middle ground between realism and nominalism. In conceptualism a general thing or universal is simply a concept in our minds. Multiple things can fit into these concepts. An example of this are colors. Many things share the property of being blue. But, blue is a concept in our mind. The problem however arises in applying said concepts. What makes one thing blue and another thing not blue? Why a football is called brown but a baseball is called white? Conceptualists say that what makes things fit into a concept is because they possess a certain quality or property and other objects do not. However this does not help it only restates the problem. While the theory of conceptualism is not perfect it works best because then we do not need to find the physical

Second, the author explains that it takes too much time to burn a ship with a burning mirror, especially if it is moving. The lecture states that the Roman ships were not made of wood only. There is a sticky material called Citch, which could set on fire in seconds not as wood in ten minutes. In addition, once the boat is on fire, it would spread in the whole boat even if it is moving.…

Concepts are relationships that denote to phenomena that transpire in nature or in thought. “Concept analysis is an approach espoused by Walker and Avant (2011) to clarify the meanings of terms and to define terms (concepts) so that writers and readers share a common language” (McEwen & Wills, 2014, p. 58). Concept analysis should be directed when concepts require explanation or further growth.…

Theseus’ Ship set sail with a cargo of lumber, and each day, Theseus used the lumber to replace parts of the ship. By the time it arrived at its destination, the cargo was empty and all the parts of the ship had been replaced. Was it still the same ship? And if not, at what point did it stop being the same ship? Was it when the first change was made? When Theseus replaced half of the original ship? Would he have had to replace more than half for it to be a different ship? This question and the variety of possible answers has been a topic of great controversy among many philosophers over thousands of years, yet there still has never been agreement on one right answer. So many theories have been used to determine an answer to the problem, and every one has faced praise from some, and academic criticism from others. Thomas Reid’s imperfect identity theory, however, offers the most practical solution to the Theseus’ Ship question.…
