To follow up from last week's analysis, chapter fifteen of Ronald Takaki's A Different Mirror deep drives into the era of post-World War II. Astonishingly, it was only a little over twenty years ago when the University of California Board of Regents member Ward Connerly formally banned affirmative action in the university admission process. For the fear that this practice promoted a form of 'reverse discrimination' because seats would be pulled away from whites and Asians in order to favor African and Latino Americans. With this in mind, Connerly shared a similar ideology with President Ronald Reagan that African Americans could match the growing success of Asian Americans should they study and work hard enough. After his success with…

“The Glass Castle” by Jeanette Walls is an extremely intriguing novel that really kept my attention throughout the whole story. The Walls family is definitely one that is unlike any I’ve ever come across, and the lessons that the children learned were ones that helped shaped their lives and made them who they are today. Jeanette obviously learned so much from her experience that she wrote a whole book about it, managing to hold the reader’s attention through all 281 pages. Jeanette Walls goes through many descriptions of situations that she faced that people normally should not face. For most of her childhood, she was traveling from place to place because her parents always thought that they would hit it big and never finding a steady job.…

Michael Jackson once sang the following lyrics in his song, Man in the Mirror: “I'm starting with the man in the mirror. I'm asking him to change his ways, and no message could have been any clearer. If you want to make the world a better place take a look at yourself, and then make a change.” When someone reads a book they often have a view about one or more characters. It is sometimes made before even knowing the person. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird many of the characters are being judged by people who barely know them. There is an ugliness in the book that comes from judging people. The ultimate message is that great good can result when one defers judgement until considering things from another person's…

In Sylvia Plath 's poem "Mirror", the reader takes a look into the messages presented and compares them with the reflections that are cast in a mirror and images in a lake. When reading this poem, we discover that the speaker is the actual reflection that gives the interpretation of its views. The first interpretation is shown as a mirror on the wall "I am silver and exact. I have no preconceptions." (1), second as the water in the lake because she states "Now I am a lake." (10), and third through the eyes of an aging woman that is revealed in line 17 "In me she has drowned a young girl, and in me an old woman/ Rises toward her day after day…"…

Our lives are surrounded by buildings. Houses, public buildings and commercial properties such as shops, restaurants, leisure venues and offices can be found just about anywhere. However in its essence, most buildings are pretty much the same; just floors and walls placed in different layouts. Luckily, anything that has an interior can be designed, redesigned or refurbished. With the abundance of home, design, property and architecture shows on TV, the interior design profession has expanded and become significantly more popularized than decades before. All across the country, more and more people are becoming interested in home improvement. However, home improvement techniques, building standards and materials, as well as trends in decor change and can change frequently and drastically. Homeowners attempting seemingly uncomplicated tasks such as selecting fixtures or interior finishes often find themselves overwhelmed with the sheer amount of choices that are necessary in a successful renovation. Interior decoration being our forte, we still are thrilled to step into the living room and see our artistic touch. The tray ceiling designed with lights faces down on our Lorenzo leather armchair and divan sofa which we have saved hard to buy. Square shaped cushions quilted with floral designs are well arranged on the divan sofa. The polished wooden floor tiles, feels so cool under my feet. In front of the sofa, lays a Persian rug, a gift from my much travelled aunt on which the unique Kenshoma style coffee table lends a contemporary look. A collage of all my artwork from kindergarten to standard 6 takes pride of place above the flat screen Samsung TV. Across on the opposite wall is the window overlooking the park.…
