The Theodore Johns Library is a more recent addition to the Beaumont Public Library System. It was founded in 2002 and named after Judge Theodore R. Johns Sr. (Theodore Johns Library). The library serves a predominantly African American population ranging in ages from young children to senior citizens. The library’s mission, as well as the Beaumont Public Library System as a whole, is to “link resources to the citizens of Beaumont to enrich their lives” (About Us). A main goal is to give access of information to the whole community by providing books, audiobooks, magazines, DVDs, and computer access to patrons of all ages. Besides story time and movie screenings, the library hosts book signings by local or independent authors, seminars, and lectures. This month the library is focusing on Black History Month holding an event later this month called “Crisis in Black Education: Learning through Spirituals” (Mojica). Recently, a partnership with Lamar University’s Speech and Hearing Clinic initiated a new program called the Family Place library. Graduate students of the Speech and Hearing Sciences Department volunteers with the library to provide workshops and play base activities for parents of babies and toddlers. The workshops provide an opportunity for families to spend time together, make friends and talk one-on-one with specialists on various aspects of child development and early literacy (Mojica Family Place Workshops). The addition of the Family Place initiative is to increase the library’s role as a community center in the aspects of child development and learning (Mojica Family Place …show more content…
The library website is part of the city website and informs users of library news, services, and library hours. Theodore Johns also has its own Facebook page, posting pictures of events held at the library. The noteworthy improvement is in the Library’s online card catalog. The online card catalog is easier to use, having a search bar and drop down menu to narrow results by fields and location in the library (Beaumont Public Library Catalog). Patrons can also sign into their library account, by logging in with their library card number; to see how many books they checked out, if they have any fines, and can renew and request books (Beaumont Public Library

For my field assignment I attended a program called Babies, Books and Bubbles, at my local public library in Shrewsbury, Ma. The library is located on 609 Main Street Shrewsbury, MA 01545 and the program is available to the public for caregivers/parents and their babies whose ages can range from birth to two years old. The program had one female main speaker named Sharon Martin, who is the head of the children’s department at the library. The program was free, but required you to obtain “tokens” from the Children’s Program Front Desk to gain admission to the program. These “tokens” were a form of registration the library uses to make sure they did not overbook the program. They became available at 10 am on the day of the program,…

In the more traditional sense, a library is a collection of books. It can mean the collection, the building or room that houses such a collection, or both. The term “library” has itself acquired a secondary meaning: “a collection of useful material for common use,” and in this sense is used in fields such as science and health, mathematics, English, and many more.…

A library is organized for use and maintained by a public body, an institution, a corporation, or a private individual. Public and institutional collections and services may be intended for use by people who choose not to — or cannot afford to — purchase an extensive collection themselves, who need material no individual can reasonably be expected to have, or who require professional assistance with their research. In addition to providing materials, libraries also provide the services of librarians who are experts at finding and organizing information and at interpreting information needs. Libraries often provide quiet areas for studying, and they also often offer common areas to facilitate group study and collaboration. Libraries often provide public facilities for access to their electronic resources and the Internet. Modern libraries are increasingly being redefined as places to get unrestricted access to information in many formats and from many sources. They are extending services beyond the physical walls of a building, by providing material accessible by electronic means, and by providing the assistance of librarians in navigating and analyzing very large amounts of information with a variety of digital tools.…
