The old man landed in a family's backyard on a very rainy muddy day. When he is discovered, they treat him like an outsider or a newly discovered species of animal. They get him up from the ground and placed him in a chicken coop, but the man just sits in the corner and does not bother to get out. I feel that this action shows how prideful he is because he knows he is going to get out before long, and he would rather not embarrass himself. “The inconvenience of the wings and quite intelligently concluded that he was a lonely castaway from some foreign ship wrecked by the storm… in front of the chicken coop ” (Marquez p1). Even if he is stronger than the other people he does not want to stoop to their level. “Anger is the enemy of non-violence and pride is the monster that swallows it up” (Gandhi).
