A Very Little Paper with Enormous Clarity Flipping through the hundreds of pages in the Norton Sampler lead me to a beautiful story, that most would find too fantasy for the adult imagination. Although, my adult imagination pieced together the images in this story and made it clear that it is an overlooked treasure. “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, contains many important qualities that a child, although it is a more childlike tale, would overlook. These hidden symbols are what paint a clear, in the fantasy and make believe. These symbols are the qualities developed the tale in an organized piece of fiction. “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” is an example of a fantasy tale being a perfect work of fiction by developing hidden symbols, themes, and a well defined setting within the creativity that explains how one or more elements help evaluate the piece within its historical contexts. A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings is a story about a Colombian couple, Pelayo and Elisenda, whom discovered a mysterious old in the park during a tropical storm. The idea of a fallen angel is very prevalent even in today’s time period. Although, a closer reading of the text reveals underlying symbols and themes that link to the historical context of the tale. The first obvious symbol is the man wings. This symbolizes an angel not only to the reader but the character within the story. Angels were more prevalent in the times like the development of civil rights. This reveals a small idea about when the story was written and even what it is written about. “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” was published in 1955 during the civil right’s movement.     Marquez creates a symmetrical structure throughout her diction in the story line by opening with the arrival of an [unusual] presence that further causes a change between the lives of several characters, and ends with a departure that finishes the natural cycle. It begins with the entrance of the old man, the community questioning if indeed he is an angel, and ends with his final departure. Upon discovery, “…it was a [very] old man, lying face down in the mud, who, in spite of his tremendous efforts, couldn’t get up, impeded by his enormous wings” (Marquez 234) that initially started the debate amongst the community. The confusion began as the family wondered what to do with the creature or if he were some sort of angel from the heavens. The physical features looked like a man however; the [obscure] wings led people to believe he was some sort of angel. His [picturesque] presence changed the views of the whole community and serving as a main attraction. Then you see the townsfolk, especially Pelayo and Elisenda, reacting to the presence of this foreign object. Though you are given a grand scope of things with phrases like, “[t]he world had been sad since Tuesday” (285), and “[t]he curious came from far away” (288), you allowed to freely interpret these events as they unfold your eyes. They can also allow you to speculate about topics that aren’t specified within the story, such as, why is this winged man here? What purpose does he serve? Even though you get to look over a broad scope you are given the same information, or lack there of, that the townspeople are getting. For instance you are given the opinion of “a neighbor woman who knew everything about life and death”, who says that it is some sort of fallen angel.     Everyone is unique and different in their own way, and that makes them beautiful. In “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings,” Gabriel García Márquez gives the reader distractions from the basic story line to make the reader focus more on the other characters, such as the villagers and other situations throughout the story, other than our main character. The story tells of Pelayo and his wife Elisenda, who find an old man with wings in their courtyard, so the couple attempt to communicate with the old man but are unable to since he speaks in a different language. Pelayo locks the angel in a chicken coop. And soon thereafter a new attraction comes to town, as a woman who disobeyed her parents when she was young, and transformed into a spider, now tells her misfortunes to the audience. Meanwhile, no longer trapped in the chicken coop, the angel is free to roam around the house until one day he leaves the house and flies away. “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” is allegory for immigration with the “old man” symbolizes a group of people who immigrate to a place from far away only to be badly treated, whereas the “spider woman” symbolizes the immigrants desire for people’s understanding, through communicating one’s physical description and action.…
