In the short story, The Tell-Tale Heart the tone of the story is very dark and scary. The author makes the tone scary by the time of day, actions, sad or depressing words, and death. The main character who is afraid of an old man's heart, tries to kill the old man to get read of the eye. When he tries to kill the old man it is during the middle of night and it is stormy. To make the tone even more scary all the lights are off in the house and the main character creeps around the house very slowly and methodically. He even opens the door very slow and only takes a couple of steps at a time into the old man's bedroom. Edgar Allan Poe makes the story even more scary with how brutal the old man's killing is.
