The Tell Tale Heart Dialectical Journal
Number 1: The three main events of the story would have to be the 8th night; the night in which the murder occurs. 2 when the narrator kills the old man. 3rd when the police arrive at the scene. I think that the eighth night was an important event in the story because it was the only night out of the 7 before that the old man had his eye open. That’s important because without the eye the narrator did not have the courage to kill the old man. The narrator killing the old man is killed, is a huge development because it liberates the audiences suspense , because it lets them know that its finally over , and that he was able to complete the task and get rid of the old man’s evil eye. The police arriving at the scene is important for the development …show more content…
The story begins with the declaration, “TRUE!—nervous—very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad? . . . Hearken! And observe how healthily—how calmly I can tell you the whole story.” Notice how the author made sure to give very little detail on the story’s background, except that the narrator had an obsession with the old man’s deformed eye. (“One of his eyes resembled that of a vulture—a pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold . . .”) which made it difficult to pin point an exact audience, to whom he could have been talking to, that is until we realize that we don’t know anything about the relationship between the old man and the narrator, although it can be presumed that the younger man is a nephew tasked with caring for his aging uncle, or, possibly, a servant whose mental state has diminished by virtue of his daily exposure to the old man’s eye. Poe chose not to provide those details as he also, doesn’t provide us with who he’s speaking with. But the only thing we receive is how the narrator has continuous references to his mental state (“Now this is the point. You fancy me mad. Madmen know nothing. But you should have seen me”). Which is why the audience is led to believe that the reason he is describing is crime in such great detail is because he’s trying to convince his psychiatrist of his

But that story really got to me, I really enjoyed reading it. I would have never thought that this story would be part of gothic literature, but after reading and analyzing it, I have realized that this story has a lot of elements of a gothic literature. For example, the fact that the eye of the old man makes the narrator mad is supernatural, supernatural is a big element for gothic literature. Also, the narrator is unreliable. For example when Poe says ‘’the disease had sharpened my senses –not destroyed –not dulled them.’‘ (Poe 1) he claims to have good and sharpened senses, but when the eye laid sight on the narrator he panicked and killed the old man. So in fact it is ironic that he says he isn’t mad when he killed a…

The one detail we are told about the old man is that “He had the eye of a vulture” (Poe, 1589). The narrator only described the old man by his eye. It astonishes me that he choice to describe the old man by just a single physical trait, an eye. The eye must stand for something as the narrator continues to talk about his eye throughout the story. Calling it the “evil eye” (Poe, 1590), describing it as “all a dull blue, with a…

The Tell-Tale Heart, by Edgar Allen Poe, is a short story that was about a narrator telling their process of the murder of an old man because of his eye, but it never specifically stated what the narrator’s gender was. Maybe it was a female, since there were many clues that support this claim, such as the narrator being a housekeeper for the old man, this could explain why the murder was very clean and why she had access to his home in the first place, and because she was a female, the police officers who came to the house didn’t suspect much. First of all, the narrator could have been a female housekeeper for the old man does make sense. In the story, after the narrator killed and hid the old man’s body, officers came and since the narrator…

The narrator opens the story by claiming he is nervous and oversensitive, not mad. He tries to prove his sanity, stating, “How, then, am I mad? Hearken! And observe how healthily – how calmly I can tell you the whole story” (Poe, 27). It becomes apparent that the narrator is mad when stating how he loves the old man, “Object there was none. Passion there was none. I loved the old man” (Poe, 27). The narrator uses an unreasonable rational, further indicating his mental state of madness. He provides the rational that the old man’s eye was the reason to take his life, stating “Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and by so degrees – very gradually – I made up my…

The theme for this short story is guilt, the guilt the narrator feels after taking the old man’s eye and eventually his life is what causes him to feeling he has to reassure himself he is sane, and to confessing to his crime. The narrator feels he must rid the old man of his eye for no other reason than that of his eye. So the narrator “undid the lantern cautiously-oh, so cautiously-I undid it just so much that a single thin ray fell upon the vulture eye” (440). The narrator continued to do this for eight nights, until on the eighth night he was able to successfully liberate the old man from his eye which “chilled the very marrow in [the narrators] bones” (441). After the narrator is able to free the eye from the old man is when the guilt kicked in, and Poe used the symbol of the old man’s heart beating to signify the narrator’s guilt. “Now I say, there came to my ears a low, dull, quick sound, such as a watch makes when enveloped in cotton. I knew that sound well, too. It was the beating of the old man’s heart” (441).…

Has being mad ever made you do something you wouldn't expect? Such as violence? In "Lamb to the Slaughter" by Roald Dahl and "Tell Tale Heart" by Edgar Allen Poe that's what the main character did, but for a different reason. Mary in "Lamb to the Slaughter" murdered her husband, Patrick Maloney, for telling Mary he is going to leave her. In "Tell Tale Heart" the narrator killed the old man simply because of his eye. That is just one difference between these two stories but there's many more as well of similarities.…

“ The Tell-Tale Heart” is a short story by Edgar Allen Poe was first published in 1843. It is told by an unnamed narrator who endeavors to convince the reader of his sanity, while describing a murder he committed. The victom is an old man with a filmly “vulture-eye,” as the narrator calls it. The murder is carefully calculated, and the murderer hides the body by dismemberment and hides it under the floorboards. Ultimately the narrator’s guilt manifest itself in the form of sound-possibly hallucinatory- of the old man’s heart still beating under the floorboards. His mental state in this story was clearly absurb and psychotic in every way possible and it led him to take an old man’s life. This shows that we as humans ascribe an incredible amount of significance to each others' expressions, particularly those which involve the eyes. The n…

First, the narrator in “The Tell-Tale Heart” establishes his insanity because he wants to murder the old man due to his “vulture eye” (Poe). The narrator’s fondness and admiration for the old man is dominated by his mania with that “pale blue eye” (Poe). He wants to kill the old man because of his eye, because he senses that the eye is always observing him and evaluating him and he feels condemned under its gaze (Poe). The narrator references many times in the story that he would like the eye to go away forever (Poe). Not only does he unmistakably admit his animosity of the eye, but he also repeats and repeats how much he scorns the old man’s eye (Poe). The narrator even admits that the old man has “never wronged” him or “given him insult”, but that “it was the eye” (Poe). This shows a psychological obsession with the old man’s eye. He is possessed with the idea that the eye is evil and that it is affect him negatively (Rajan). After all his ranting about details of the eye, he finally says he wants to kill the old man to “kill the eye” (Poe). This will close the eye’s disturbing gaze forever, because it is the “right thing” to do, for him. The next demonstration of…

In the case of Poe's narrator, he showed symptom of paranoia He believed that his old room mate's eye was evil." One of his eyes resembled that of a vulture- a pale blue eye, with a film over it."(Poe 117) The narrator comments that he liked the old man but didn't like his eye. The narrator justifies the murder by believing that the old man will vex him. The irony here is that the old man is murdered because he is considered a madman by one who is himself insane. The narrator believes that by killing the old man he can get rid of the curse that the eye possesses. He is paranoid that the old man will figure out his plan so he takes extra…

The tell tale heart is a short story written by Edgar Allan Poe. As most Poe's narrator the narrator is an unreliable first person narrator. It means that the narrator is unable to relate the real facts of the story even though he attempts to convince the reader that he possesses all his senses and therefore he can tell him the '' whole story''. ''how healthily-how calmly I can tell you the whole story''. Later in the story just before the climax he says:'' And now have I not told you what you mistake for madness is but over-acuteness of the senses?''. And just after he committed the murder'' If you still think me mad you will think so no longer when I describe the wise precautions I took for the concealment of the body''.Indeed the narrator needs to prove us that he is a reliable and sane person. He tries to prove his sanity by telling a story from his past describing the steps of his deed with an accurate precision. Moreover he dissimulates his feelings with the old man so that he doesn't have an inkling about what he is up to. '' And every morning, when the day broke, I went boldly into the chamber, and spoke courageously to him, calling him by names in a hearty tone, and inquiring how he had passed the night.'' Thus if he tries to convince both the reader and the old man that he is a sane person and we are aware that he uses dissimulation with the old man, it might also suggest that the narrator uses dissimulation while telling the story. He is actually a sick man due to his oversensitivity of hearing which enables him to '' hear all things in the heaven and in the earth''. So the narrator has a blurred vision of what reality is, he is obsessed with the eye of the old man'' his eye resembled that of a vulture-a pale blue eye, with a film over it.…

This article focuses more on the narrator of the story rather than the eye, but the eye is still mentioned. It also brings up the question of Poe’s temperament during the time he wrote the story stating, “Second, that literary men in general, at the beginning of the nineteenth century, were still in the trough of the wave of German romanticism, which exalted extravagant and clamorous and stormy sentimentality above the quieter, deeper, truer moods of human feeling.” (1998) More further research into this matter can help explain why so much of Poe’s work was dark.…

Although both versions of Edgar Allen Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" were equally entertaining, the cartoon version of the story is more effective in conveying the narrators insanity than the performance. There are multiple reasons why the cartoon was much more successful in expressing the narrators madness. Some of these reasons include the distinct sound effects, prominent facial expressions, outstanding computer effects and even the hinting at another hidden message in the story.…
