The Tell-Tale Heart By Edgar Allen Poe

Edgar Allen Poe had a very sad, disappointing life. His mother passed away and then his father left, leaving young Poe an orphan. He was then taken away from his brothers and sisters and adopted into a well to do family. He received a good education and even attended college for a short time. However, he didn’t always get along with his stepfather. They didn’t always agree on the money situation. As he got older, he had an alcohol and drug problem. He also developed a gambling problem. All throughout his life he watched the ones he cared about die. This is what caused his unusual style of writing. He incorporated details from his life into the stories he wrote. This allowed him to write such sad, dark stories.
“The Cask of Amontillado”
This story he is between love and hate. In life you sometimes hurt the people that you love. He doesn’t like the man’s eye but he does care about the man. He thinks the eye is evil and wants to get rid of it. The only way he knows to get rid of it is to murder the man.
“The Fall of the House” is sad and gloomy. He believes the house is evil and sick. The landscape around the house has either died or is nasty. It is the house his friend lives in and he is not feeling well so he asked him to come and visit. The man believes the house is what made him sick. One of the friends a twin sister passes away and they bury her in the tomb in the house, because they don’t want anyone to mess with her body. She then gets out of the tomb and her brother dies from fear.
In all of his stories someone dies. Whether it is from murder or a sickness. That is how most of his own family members passed away. In his life he loved his wife and mother and both of them passed from tuberculosis a sickness. His father left him before his mother passed. He was taken in by a family but he didn’t always get along with his stepfather. They seem to always disagree on how much money he spent. As he got older he turned to alcohol to help with his pain in his life. He wasn’t very close to his family and only loved a few and the few he loved left him in one way or
