Most schools start before 8:00 a.m. which causes the students to feel weary or drowsy during the school day. That provokes the idea of them not being able to be as successful in school as well as get them injured or hurt more often and easily. The article “The Teen Who Woke Up Her School”, the video “Later School Start Time Has Surprising Results” and the infographic “Wake Up Call” all support the idea of schools starting at a later time. Schools must start the day at a later time than before 8:00 a.m. because that will improve the student’s overall academic/mental and physical performances during and outside of school. The article, “The Teen Who Woke Up Her School,” supports the idea of starting school at a later time. Consequently, that means that their brain is not able to function at its best because it requires 8.25 to 9.25 hours of rest. In the graphic it shows, “Teens need 8.25 to 9.25 hours of sleep each night, as well as ⅔ of high school students get less than 7 hours of sleep a night.” At the same time, there are many reasons why schools should start at an early time. Arguably, for sport players they need time to practice after school and that can’t happen unless school starts early and ends at an early time too. Moreover, sports teams wouldn’t have enough time to practice after school if schools didn’t start at an earlier time. Even so, it would be hard to change the schedule and adjust the bus times for all of the other schools in the district. In any case, it would allow students to have more time to do their homework and go to sleep at an earlier

Although research shows that teens experience changes in their internal sleep clocks that make it more difficult to wake up and go to bed early, starting school later in the day will not be a solution to this problem. Starting and ending school later will only take opportunities away from students. Starting school later may allow students more time to rest, but it does not allow them much time after school to have an opportunity to participate in sporting events, clubs, or have a job. For example, if school didn't let out until late in the afternoon, teens would not be able to have a job because it would be too late for them to go to work. Also, school ending later leaves less time for student athletes to participate in sports. To many…

One reason school start times should be later than they are now is because junior high and high school students are “programmed” to stay up late and sleep in. During teenage years, students bodies are designed to stay up later and sleep in. Both When Sleep Becomes A Nightmare, an article written by Scholastic, and the National Sleep Foundation website agree with just that! Nancy Shute, an award-winning science journalist, stated on npr.com “...it’s difficult, if not impossible, for them to fall asleep before 10:30.” If students fall asleep at 10:30 pm and get the recommended amount of rest, which is 9 ½ hours, students should not wake up until 7:00 am. Some schools have already started class at this…

One of the reasons we think the school start time should stay the same is because it will make the time commitment of participating in after school activities more difficult to manage. All of us, like many other students, participate in after school activities. A later school start time will mean that school activities will start later and run even later than they do now. The later in the day it gets, the less energy we have to give 100% effort mentally. We will also be more physically tired which means if…
