The Story of Cain and Abel
The Story of Cain and Abel (Gen 4: 1-16)

Then Adam had intercourse with his wife Eve, and Eve became pregnant. She bore a son and said “By the Lord’s Help I have gotten a son.” So she named him Cain, later she gave birth to another son, Abel. Abel became a shepherd, but Cain grew up to be a Farmer. After some time Cain brought some of his harvest to the Lord and gave it as an offering to the Lord. Then Abel brought the first Lamb born to one of his Sheep, killed it, and gave the best parts of it as an offering. The Lord was pleased with Abel and his offering, but he rejected Cain and his offering. Cain became a furious, and he scowled in anger.

Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why that scowled on your face? If you had done with the right thing, you would be smiling; but because you have done evil, sin is crouching at your door. It wants to rule you, but you must overcome it.” The Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out in the fields.” When they were out in the fields, Cain turned to his brother and killed him. The Lord asked Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” He answered “I don’t know. Am I supposed to take care of my brother?”

Then the Lord said “Why have you done this terrible thing? Your brother’s blood is crying out to me from the ground, like a voice calling for revenge. You are placed under a curse and can no longer farm his soil. It has soaked up your brother’s blood as if it had opened his mouth to receive it when you killed him. If you try to grow crops, the soil will not produce anything; you will be a homeless wanderer on the earth.

And Cain said to the Lord, “This punishment is too hard for me to bear. You are driving me off to the land and away from your presence. I will be a homeless wanderer on the earth, and anyone who finds me will kill me.”

But the Lord answered, “No. If anyone kills you, seven lives will be taken in revenge.” So the Lord put a mark on Cain to warn anyone who met him not to kill him. And Cain

They become the “Cain and Abel” throughout the story. As relating to Cain, Cal takes on his role, while Aron is Abel. Cal is jealous of his brother Aron because he is seemingly perfect. Cal does not directly kill Aron, but Aron gets killed because of Cal. Adam asks Cal where Aron has gone, and Cal’s response was, “Am I supposed to look out for him?” After murdering Abel, God questions Cain about where Abel is, and Cain answered, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” Steinbeck strays away from the biblical story because Cal tells Aron that their mother is still alive and is living as a prostitute. Hearing this destroys Aron causing him to enlist into the Army during World War 1. Aron dies in France. In the bible Cain physically kills his brother, and Cal indirectly kills him. God sent Cain to live in Nod, East of Eden and he cursed him. In the book, Cal realizes that he can overcome his sin, and he is forgiven by his…

The Hebrew flood story is very similar to this. God is angry in this story because his people are wicked (Genesis 6-9). God punishes man by sending out a flood to kill all living things. However, God saves Noah and his family. He tells Noah to build an ark, and that he must bring two of every animal onboard with him. It proceeded to rain for forty days and forty nights. After the rain stopped, Noah sent a dove out to see if it was still wet. The dove would come back, as it could not find a dry place to land. After sending it out many times, the dove finally did not come back and it was dry. God then told Noah’s sons to be fertile and to reproduce, and from them humanity branched out.…

His father, for example, was not an evil man, however he was a compulsive liar who was able to work in positions built off the platform of his false background. Cathy, Adam’s wife, would be another example because she killed her parents, lied about her whole life, and even shot Adam, but he still could not see her for who she was. After the departure of Cathy he did little to take care of his sons and rather grieved the loss and betrayal of his wife. It was stated that “He was aware of the twins because he heard them cry and laugh, but he felt a distaste for them. To Adam they were symbols of his loss”(250). This behavior would continue until Adam, Samuel, and Lee began to discuss the biblical story of Cain and Abel in which Cain kills Abel out of jealousy and is then told by God to overcome sin and is banished “East of Eden”. Lee believed that the story was altered in translation and stated “The American Standard translation orders men to triumph over sin…The King James translation makes a promise in ‘Thou Shalt’, meaning that men will surely triumph over sin. But the Hebrew word, the word timshel-,’Thou mayest’- that gives a choice”(301). It was the word “timshel” that would forever change…

Since the beginning of time, deceit has brought the fall of man. Deceit has always been a primary trait of evil. In biblical times, Cain and Abel (The first children ever born) are a perfect example of the situation in “The Cask of Amontillado”. Cain (the older brother) was jealous of his younger brother Abel, because he believed he was God’s favorite. He took Abel to a cliff and tricked him and bashed his head with a stone and pushed him off a cliff. The deceit and trickery of one man caused the death and fall of another. Deceitfulness, trickery, lies, etcetera all bring about a negative outcome to the matter.…
