The Role Of Children's Education During The Industrial Revolution
Kids as young as five were forced to work many days of the week from approximately five o'clock in the morning until ten o'clock at night. This was sourced from the history learning site. These working situations left many young girls and boys with no time of their own, and by the time they got home many slept until there were woken by older children earlier the next morning. This affected the children's education and because of this Sunday schools were opened. (Engels, F, 1844). Throughout the entire Industrial Revolution the children's social status gradually improved due to the creation of child rights.This was mainly subjected to fact that other classes remained wealthy while those that were worse off began to get forced into work. It was only until 1833 when children's rights improved due to the inclusion of a factory act. This meant their social ranking slowly began to increase. The working classes and middle classes were added to the social ladder and due to their work experience most children were placed into the working class category. New laws permitted children to attend school for at least two hours daily and only work for a certain amount of time per day. This increased education in the next generation resulted in a smarter community which helped to implement new social strategies, inventions and ideas. In the long term education was seen as one of the most important benefits to children in the Industrial Revolution.     For many children, the Industrial Revolution had a negative impact on their lives. The children who had to work did not have a say in whether they wanted to or not. Since children were working about 16 hours a day, they were unable to attend school to get any education at all (Document 1). Because they were unable to go to school, they were never taught how to write (Document 1). Some children who did work in the factories were fortunate enough to learn how to read from family members at home such as parents, or older siblings. In most factories where children were found, they were beaten if they did not follow directions or if they have done something wrong.
