The Role Of Change In Nursing
Change is inevitable as we progress through the years. Various techniques become available, new diseases are discovered, and we discover new treatments based on evidenced based practice. However, change can sometimes be hard for people and organizations. The purpose of this discussion board post is to discuss why it is essential for nurses to be a competent leader to effectively manage change and innovation. I will provide two examples of how change has been successfully (or unsuccessfully) managed in my organization, with rationale. I will reveal which change theory was used to successfully implement this change as well. Leadership is an important quality for a nurse to have. We motivate others, need to have effective communication, and can help influence others to obtain a goal in a positive way (Huber, 2014). There are various styles that are used to effectively manage change within an organization. To be effective, we must use a combination of leadership and management techniques. Many of the senior nurses had done paper charting for so many years, and was computer illiterate, that they did not like the thought of this change. This innovation change would bring a new way to chart our patients that could reduce errors, miscommunication, speed the process of orders, and reduce possibilities of omissions needed within the chart, to name a few. Since it was considered a traditional planned change, many of the nurses were resistant to the situation. Our manager used an authoritarian leadership style and did not include the staff in any discussion prior to letting us know about these drastic changes.     Besides the investigation between two nurses about shift exchange, I must find the holistic approach of the individual nurse. According to transformational style, a leader must be concerned about the individual needs of each nurse and to do this by working one-on-one in a private manner.
