The Rhetorical Effects Of Cigarette Smoking
In most parts of the world the media is filled with all kinds of smoking ads that persuade you to buy and try their product. By doing so, they try to make the ad look cool and appealing so that we don’t have to think about the bad side effects that smoking causes. Luckily, there are still ads that want to eliminate smoking. The rhetorical effects of this smoking advertisement is to stop people from smoking, mostly parents. Although smoking does affect your physical health, it can also harm your family and peers who are around you.
The viewer’s eyes are immediately drawn to the crayons in the cigarette box. The usage of crayons that is shown in order to replace the damaging thing is known as, cigarettes, is used to symbolize minors. As kids, we used crayons to draw and color when we were bored. Crayons can be described as happiness and world- changing philanthropy, so can children. That is why they used crayons to replace cigarette to symbolize children. They did this so it shows that when parents or siblings smoke, children are being affected. Sadness, surprise, and disgust is what I contribute from this ad.

    From the very beginning the video hooks the viewer with the words “Smoking Kid” displayed as a title screen. These are two words that are typically not found associated with each other, so this quickly strikes the viewer’s curiosity. The advertisement starts as the smokers act as protagonists by denying these young children the ability to smoke and instead educating them on how dangerous the habit is. There is a sense of shame that overcomes viewers as they watch these young, innocent children politely ask for someone to light their cigaret. On the other hand seeing these citizens refuse to light their cigarettes shows that the societies we live in are not as evil as we sometimes make them out to be and may create a small amount of pride. This pride however, quickly transforms into a feeling of slight confusion. In the conclusion of the advertisement the children give a brochure to the smokers that reads, “You worry about me. But why not about yourself,” and beneath that is a hotline number for people who want to quit smoking. Reading the brochure creates confusion for the viewer because it is hard to understand how someone who just explained to a child why smoking is bad for them still chooses to smoke.
