Looking at the chart shown in the results section, it is clear the most frequent behaviors are bark, yell, and yelp. The correlation between these three behaviors is that all of them are vocal behaviors. Beginning with the behavior of barking, barking is a very typical form of communication for seals and revolves around establishing and defending territory and mates (SOURCE). Harbor seals, usually males, will bark at other males in order to create territorial boundaries among themselves. These territorial boundaries are not created in order increase access to food because the diet of the harbor seal consists primarily of fish, which are located only in the water. This means that seals secure territories in order to secure mates. There is a competition between males to acquire mates and reproduce and it is for this reason that it's so important for males to be territorial.…

Two animals that I chose are Panthera leo spelaea known as European or Eurasian cave lion and cave bear. European cave lion lived from about 370,000 to 10,000 years ago. From the paintings and the fossils that have been found we can say that cave lion is much bigger that the normal lions that we know today. Rounded, protruding ears, tufted tail, and perhaps faint, tiger-like stripes are the common thing between all of the lion caves. Mountain lion was living in Europe until the last European Ice Age. Cave lion lived in the same time pried that man was living in the cave because there is a panting of them all over the caves. The paintings in Paleolithic Europe shows some species that only people who saw them and lived around them can paint them…

People often see sea organisms that look the same and think that they have the same name; however, they do no not have the same name do to their characteristics. What is a characteristic? By definition a characteristic is a specific feature(s) or quality that help distinct an organism. Thus, a person might spot a seal and then make a conclusion that sea lions and seals contain the same name and are alike; however, this is not true due to the fact that sea lions have visible ear flaps, solid color, and long flippers with claws where as seals have ear holes, spots with multiple colors, and short flippers with claws. Thus, sea lions and seals have different characteristics that set them apart even though they both belong…

In five months alone, over 3,000 sea lion pups, at a point teetering towards death, washed ashore on Southern Californian beaches, fifteen times more than in past years, due to toxic algal blooms. Merriam Webster calls algal blooms, “rapid and excessive growths of a plankton population.” Since 1998, scientists have been aware of sea lions and their pups being intoxicated by domoic acids from toxic algal blooms. Agricultural and suburban areas are the main culprits as excess fertilizer and pesticides from fields and lawns are washed away in urban runoff and travel to our oceans by stormdrain. The nutrients in fertilizers and pesticides are overfeeding the algae, producing toxic algal blooms that expel poisonous…

There are two perspectives on this topic, with it or against it. Harp seals are overcrowding and lowering the population of fish in the Canadian waters, this leads to unemployment in many fish industries. There is an animal chain that has to be balanced, by having too many seals they overpopulate and jump the chain, their meat is a great source of omega 3 and 6, their pelts are water resistant and in many cases do not cause allergies, so the hunting sounds pretty beneficial. It’s the most regulated hunt of its kind & the population is large enough to sustain the hunting. There are 9.5 million harp seals and the hunting of seal pups has reduced the global seal population by two-thirds, but there are many other different ways to fix the problem…

    Coyote and Bear

The Native American tale of "Coyote and Bear", originally translated from oral tradition in nineteen six by G. A. Dorsey in the book The Pawnee, Mythology, Part I, tells us the story of Coyote who accidentally meets Bear, and in order to protect himself from being killed by Bear, starts to make up self praising stories to impress Bear. Eventually, Coyote convinces Bear, but after a few hesitant moves, Bear realizes that Coyote was lying. The tale then, ends up with the murder of Coyote by Bear. The most relevant literary figure used in the tale is the trickster, which is, in the study of folklore, a god, a spirit, or simply a human hero who breaks god´s or nature´s rules, sometimes with bad intention, but usually with final positive effects. Most of the times, these broken rules take the form of tricks. Tricksters can be cunning, or foolish, or both. They are often very funny even though sometimes considered sacred. The present tale is part of the Native American oral tradition of the trickster, which is esthetically simple but considered sacred at the times, in which Coyote represents the figure of survival, who would invent any story to get away from death. Bear represents the nature, and its normal evolution of the species through the predation process. However, being myself aware of the likelihood…
