Discrimination is a term that numerous people use frequently to describe unfair treatment. Unfair treatment, is a universal issue that effects the majority of individuals in our society today. In the United States, discrimination has been a hot topic of discussion for hundreds of years. Many people have suffered greatly or even lost their lives at the hands of inequality and injustice. People can be subject to discrimination for numerous reasons such as age, color, gender or sexually orientation. Individuals can be subject to unfair treatment personally and professionally in their lifetime. In the workplace, many employees have felt the impact of unfair treatment. Wage inequality has been one of the many injustices that women have encountered for decades. Pay inequities for women have negative connotations for the employer and the employee. Klein and Lamb (2015) state “Gender pay disparity not only is one of the biggest social justice issues of our time, but also poses a risk to companies’ performance brand, and investor returns” (p.21). In this paper I would like to discuss the prevalence of pay inequities for women in the workplace. Subtopics that will be covered in this paper will be a clear description of the topic and assumptions pertaining to the topic. In addition, I will cover key action steps used by the government to try and improve the current situation. Lastly, I will cover what some specific companies are doing to overcome this issue.
