The Pearl
The Pearl written by John Steinbeck, is a book about Kino a poor diver, gathering pearls from the Gulf beds of Mexico that once brought great wealth to the Kings of Spain and now provide Kino, Juana, and their infant son with meager subsistence. Then, during a day of diving, Kino loom’s from the sea with a pearl diffrent then the rest, bigger and more beautiful than any other. With the great pearl comes hope, the promise of comfort and of security. John Steinbeck uses Kino’s canoe, the pearl, and the different songs in the story to help explain the contrast between fate and human agency, and the destiny that is made for Kino and the destiny that Kino makes for himself.
The canoe helped show the destiny that was made for Kino in many ways. This force interacts in Kino’s life by knowing that Kino was from a poor village, everyone didn't think he was capable or did not expect Kino to accomplish anything great in life. Kino’s canoe, “ was the only thing of value he owned in the world.” (Pg 14) It brought apon a source of food for him and his family. Having a canoe brought the destiny made for Kino less shallow because the fact of having a canoe which might bring a slight but decent chance of finding a wealthy pearl or pearls was great. “Kino lifted the flesh, and there it lay, the great pearl, perfect as the moon.”

Throughout the book, there are different songs that show up, like the song of the family, the song of the pearl, the song of the enemy, etc. “The music had gone out of Kino’s head, but now, thinly, slowly, the melody of the morning, the music of evile, of the enemy sounded, but it was faint and weak.” (Pg27) These songs help show the mood in which the book is taking place. The songs also help to give more details of the fate that corresponds to Kino. “In Kino’s head there was a song now, clear and soft, and if he had been able to speak of it, he would have called it the song of the Family.” (Pg

One of the reasons why money cannot buy happiness is because it becomes a chain-and-ball. When Kino found the pearl, he gets robbed and beaten many times, and his house gets burned to the ground. “The baby moaned in fright, and Juana’s eyes were wide and terrified. Kino could see the house was gone and he did not question Juana.” The burning of the house symbolizes the destruction of the family. All this happened because a group of people wanted the pearl for themselves. Their greed overcame and made them think that the pearl would buy their happiness. “For a long a moment, Kino looked out to the darkness and the he stepped outside. Juana heard a grunting struggle, the blow”. Once people found out that Kino found the pearl of the world, their greed consumed them so they try to rob Kino in the darkness. The most prominent theme in the parable of the pearl is that of the struggle between good and evil. As is the case with most parables the characters and events of the story are rendered more definitely aligned with good or evil than would be possible to appreciate amongst the degree of overlap inherent to the real world. Throughout the story the songs that Kino hears in his head reveals to him on an instinctual level of a person or thing's true nature. Thus, the song of evil accompanies the Priest who treats the indians like children and the doctor who regards them as animals. The song of the family, or the song of life, accompanies the life-sustaining morning activities as well as the family itself as they flee from their pursuers. In Kino's conception of good and evil anything that threatens the family is evil. Thus the song of evil can also accompany natural things like the scorpion which stings Coyotito. The pearl, also a product of nature, is never clearly defined as inherently good or evil. Rather its effect upon the family is shown to be evil once it has proven to be a treacherous repository of Kino's dreams.…

Kino’s pearl was a stroke of bad luck because people who wanted his fortune would do anything to get his fortune, even if it goes to the extremes. For example after Kino’s visit with the doctor a mysterious man came and attacked Kino to get the pearl. “Kino held his breath to listen, and he knew whatever dark thing was in his house was holding its breath too, to listen” (37). This represents bad luck because through the pearl, trouble has come on the family. An evil person is in their house to steal the pearl and this is not the only…

When Kino hears the song, he automatically senses that something is wrong, and that is what alerted him that Coyotito was in trouble. Another example of when Kino hears another bad song is the part in which he senses that something is wrong when he is talking with the priest of the church. “The priest said, ‘It is pleasant to see that your first thoughts are good thoughts. God bless you, my children.’ [...] He (Kino) was glancing about suspiciously, for the evil song was in his ears, shrilling against the music of the pearl” (Steinbeck 14). As the story goes on, and things get worse and worse for Kino and his family, he starts to hear more and more songs; however, he only hears the bad ones, of threat and wickedness. Eventually, near the end of the book, Kino goes insane from all the tragic events in his life. The songs help to express this. This is how he changes throughout the book.…

Kino was attacked three times which shows how greed can cause people to hurt that person in order to get what they desire.
