The “Patriot” takes place in South Carolina in 1776 during the Revolutionary War. It is a story about a widowed father of seven, named Benjamin Martin. Benjamin was involved in the French and Indian War before marrying and starting a family. He is reluctant to join the conflict as he remembers too well his own experience in the earlier French and Indian War. After his wife passed away he does everything to keep his family together and away from war. He is a patriot who wants no part in a war with Britain.
Meanwhile, his two eldest sons, Gabriel and Thomas, can't wait to go out and kill some Redcoats. When South Carolina decides to go to war with Britain, Gabriel immediately joins the Continentals .without his father's permission. Ben, who knows first hand experience wants to discourage his son from participating.
He changes his mind when his house is burned down and one of his children is killed by the savage Green Dragoon commander Colonel Tavington.. Ben's 15-year-old son Thomas is killed trying to free Gabriel as he is taken prisoner. Now, seeking revenge for his son's death, Benjamin leaves behind his 5 other children to bring independence to the 13 colonies. Martin organizes militiamen into a guerilla unit which consists of peasants, slaves, a minister, and assorted other irregulars to harass Cornwallis' army long enough to allow the French to arrive. He takes his two sons, waits in the bush, and, armed with three rifles and a tomahawk, manages to wipe out the entire platoon of soldiers. Stricken with grief, Benjamin butchers the last of the family-destroying redcoats with the tomahawk he used in the French and Indian War, Wasting no time, Benjamin and Gabriel then set about o fight, the onslaught of the brutal Brits who have crossed the line.
An enraged Ben sets about to free his son Gabriel, with the help of his two younger sons Nathan and Samuel. The three of them manage to kill many of the British troops holding Gabriel. Gabriel re-joins the cause

For example, Beah recalls the exact moments when the rebels attacked his village, “When the rebels finally came [into my village], I was cooking. The rice was done and the okra soup was almost ready when I heard a single gunshot that echoed through the town…My heart was beating faster than it ever had. Each gunshot seemed to cling to the beat of my heart…I thought about where my family was, whether I would be able to see them again, and wished that they were safe…

Ishmael Beah is an unsettled thirteen year old boy. With no family to comfort him during the war, he is apprehensive. Images of violence, as cold as ice, constantly run through his brain. While circulating through villages, Baeh and his friends find dead bodies, burnt houses, empty bullet shells, and a variety more. By this point, it barely phases him. Mitchell’s, Who Has Seen The Wind, there are many differences between Brian O’Connal and The Young Ben from the prairie. The Main different between the two boy’s is their home life, Brian’s father Gerald O’Connal is the town’s pharmacist, and a very loving and caring man, on the other hand the Young Ben’s Father, The Ben is a childish and irresponsible drunk. Brian has a caring loving father, who is always home; whereas The Young Ben’s father is only out for himself and is more interested in finding a place for his alcohol still, than caring for his only son. Another example of how the boys differ is their lifestyle, the way they were brought up; Brian was raised in a loving home, whereas the Young Ben household was more of an, everyone fends for themselves. The O’Connal family is more fortunate then the Ben family: “There was no doubt that the Young Ben wanted the gun badly, and the yearning that the Young Ben must feel found its match in the school principal.” The Mother Ben isn’t spoken about much in the novel, although The Ben is describes as very self-interested, he doesn’t care a lot about him family. Then there is the location of the boys bringing up, The Young Ben lives with his parent just outside the small Saskatchewan town on the prairie, and Brian lives in the small town. The Young Ben was first introduced as the “boy on the prairie,” said to just wonder. Another difference between Brian and The Young Ben’s home lives is their mothers. Brian’s mother, Maggie, O’Connal is well involved, and very loving, whereas The Mother Ben is not spoken of a lot in the novel, she doesn’t have a real strong presence, the author does not state if she is a caring mother or not, but we as the reader are giving a sense that The Young Ben is left to fend for himself. For example during an encounter Mr. Digby, the school principal and The Mother Ben had about Mr. Digby’s concern over The Young Ben’s School, The Mother Ben came off as though the matter did not…
