French Major Jean Villeneuve helps train the militia and promises more French aid. Benjamin's militia harasses British supply lines, capture goods - including some of Cornwallis' belongings - and burn half the bridges and ferries leading to Charleston. This had caused Tavington to grow angry because it was killing all his troops. Tavington finds out the group who had did this to his group and gets revenge by getting his troops to kill each of the militia member’s family.
This Benjamin mourns deeply and briefly wavers in his commitment to continue fighting, but is resolved when reminded of his son's dedication to the cause by finding an American flag he sewed together personally. Martin's militia, along with a larger Continental Army regiment, confronts Cornwallis' regiment in a decisive battle. The redcoats seem to be defeating the patriots until Benjamin rallies the troops forward against the British lines

Later, when the brothers are outside together Sam reveals to Tim his plan to steal their father's gun to fight-with the Patriots. Tim protests, says that stealing the gun would be a sin. It tells the causes of the revolution, how the British tried to control the revolution, and how the Americans achieved success eventually. McCullough does not hold bias when telling about actual historical personages or events, and also, this kind of unbiased depiction leaves room for audiences to give their own opinions. For example, he uses a very courteous tone to describe King George III, who is generally regarded as the villain of impeding the pace of American independence. Also, unlike any other academically historical books, there is no abstruse language, and discusses things beyond the pure historical facts. McCullough uses very easy words to tell a series of historical events in which American people are fighting for their independence. McCullough even tells funny stories about the characters that involved in this time period. When he describes a person, for example, the description of King George III of England, instead of saying he was king and listing his accomplishments, McCullough describes him like a character in a story, just like how a novelist depicts a major character in a book. Besides, as mentioned previously, there are many primary and secondary historical sources (quote, maps, and pictures, etc.) used in the book, which are truly helpful for understanding the events. In addition, this book helps the readers realize…

David McCullough’s 1776 is a well written book, starting with its title. It's a story about the war, yet no actual fighting happens for most of the book. George Washington is often diminished compared to other characters in the book, and readers almost feel sorry for the usually infamous characters such as the loyalists, Hessians, and even King George III.…

McCullough strategically and chronologically delineates each battle of the Revolution beginning with the Battle of Bunker Hill. Throughout each of the battles, McCullough thoroughly explains the colonial struggles and accomplishments as he also displays the British as a nasty group of individuals who were hard-hearted with loyalty to the Crown. However, most of the Loyalists simply feared the British royalty as punishment for treason was overbearingly harsh. Although biased, McCullough carefully displays the American Revolution as brutal for both the British and the colonists. He writes of “the most crucial year” from a cardinal view, concentrating emphasis on American strategy rather than British strategy. He acknowledges the British’s major distress, yet he undermines the importance of the drudgery of the Loyalists, disregarding the punishments that they were forced to endure by the colonists. Some of these castigations include the practice of tarring and feathering and merciless murder.…

During the Revolutionary war, there were sides that were either of the revolution or against. Those who were for, were called patriots. They managed to take control of local governments to punish those against the war and enforce restrictions against them. On the other hand, the loyalists, for the most part, were members of the elite class who had economical and cultural ties with England. The most prominent loyalist included royal officials such as judges, governors, and customs officials, wealthy merchants, conservative lawyers, but some were also ordinary colonists, Carolina farmers and tenant farmers of the Hudson River valley, as well as southern…

In “The Patriot”, the tactics of war used by the British Army differ significantly from those used by the American rebels. The British based war and victory on honor. If a battle is not won properly, it might as well have not been won at all. Benjamin Martin, the leader of the rebels, identifies the pride of the British as their weakness. The American rebels based war on victory itself and concentrated their efforts in simply defeating the British. Their sole objective is to win; they did not have the luxury of being “civil” in their war tactics. This contrast is shown very well in several scenes from the movie.…
