1-14/12 The Pardoner’s Tale: Review and Assess

1. Were you surprised by the fate of the rioters? Why or why not?
I was not surprised by the fate of rioters because this is an anecdote from which we should learn a lesson, and I knew from the beginning that the Pardoner is preaching against greed and the horrible things that come from it. 2. A) When the story opens, what are the rioters doing, and what captures their attention?
When the story opens, the rioters are drinking in a tavern. A passing funeral captures their attention, and they want to know who died and why. B) What sort of people are they? Explain how you know.
The rioters are rowdy young men looking for trouble, and who have no respect for their elders. I can tell because they are drinking early in the morning, looking to kill death, and are very rude to the old man they encounter. 3. A) What pledge do the rioters make to one another?
The rioters pledge to protect one another as if they are brothers by blood. B) Do the rioters try to keep that pledge? Explain. The rioters don’t try to protect each other. At the first chance they get (to profit themselves separately) they plot against each other. The two older men plan to stab the younger so they can split the gold, and the youngest plans to poison the older men so he can have it all for himself. 4. A) What do the rioters find under the tree?
The rioters found a pile of florins (gold) under the tree. B) The old man has said that death is under the tree. In what sense is his statement accurate? This statement is accurate because the gold under the tree instills greed in the men which causes them to kill each other. 5. A) What reason does the young rioter give the apothecary for needing the poison?
The young rioter tells the apothecary that he needs the poison to kill the rats and skunk in his yard.
B) In what sense is he lying? In what sense is he telling the truth? The young

What has society today has turned into? The people who were rioting, felt like they weren't being listened to. The day before the uprising occurred, prison guards had attempted to diffuse what they perceived to be sparring between a black and a white inmate. The two inmates were said to have been rough-housing during a warm up for a football game out on the yard. A confrontation kept the guards from taking any further action at that time. Other inmates began to make uproar. That night, the two inmates from the incident on the yard were taken from their…

Although the Pardoner deceives the public, he still confesses his sin "the very vice / [He] makes [his] living out of – avarice" (243). The Pardoner openly admits how much he values wealth over religion by "preaching" against “the very vice” – avarice. Similar to the Wife of Bath, the Pardoner seems “proud” of himself for beguiling innocent people. It is also evident from his tone that he does not believe in religion, but in wealth. Moreover, the Pardoner unambiguously states to the pilgrims, "Let me preach and beg from kirk to kirk / And never do an honest job of work...I mean to have money..." (244). The Pardoner, again, is open about his dishonesty and implies he will “never” be honest in his profession as his only goal is “to have money” despite how sacred his work is. His "work" is to con people of their money by selling pardons and artificial items. Hence, in “The Pardoner’s Tale”, an ethic that was delineated is that corruption, due to cupidity, is present in an infinite number of people, including religious officials, because they act out of arrogance rather than…

The opening paragraph utilizes emotive imagery and strong language to juxtapose between the irresponsible graffiti artists and the hardworking owners of the café. By labeling the graffiti artists as “thugs” who “desecrated the freshly painted walls” arouses feelings of anger and enmity towards the graffiti artists. This is further enhanced and supported by comments from the locals. In contrast, sympathy is expected for the Bergers through anecdotes, “…his heavily pregnant wife spent the…

It's not the rioters that cause harm to others because they support lawlessness over principled anarchy. The real anarchists are the intellectuals, the philosophers, the rednecks, the geniuses, the patriots, and every other person in between. Anarchists are all around, and all they want is to live life by affecting and being affected by no one else. Anarchy can be done in American society, as that was proven throughout this paper as we looked into the framework of anarchy, discovered the first forms of government, explored anarchist beliefs and concepts, and finally showed the correlation between anarchy and major ideals within the US. So go out, reject authority and live your life for…

Even a number of scrawny children assumed a part in the riot, viciously waving signs proclaiming, “We want to go to school!” Threateningly, the mob surrounded the affluent home of a local cotton mill owner, a man who dared to hire Irish immigrants as a replacement for the mill workers who were on strike. Torrents of authorities came rushing in, pointing guns and arresting violent participants. Rapidly, the crowd diffused, leaving only a few mumbling men with the weight of the world on their shoulders, wondering how they…

Another interesting part about this passage that I liked was the fact that the riot scene is exactly what Tod pictured when he talked about painting his picture that he would call “The Burning of Los Angeles.” The mob is the main portion of the painting, and Faye would be the one whom the crowd is chasing. The whole idea of the angry mob is to depict the people of Los Angeles who are…

Many people believe that there is no difference between the definitions of “riot” and “rebellion” at the same time others think the opposite. Riots and rebellions have occurred many times in world history quite independently of any widespread notions of civil disobedience. It is very often mentioned and argued about, that is why a huge misunderstanding occurs whether we should call one event a riot or a rebellion. In the following paper I am going to discuss the main differences and give examples of these terms.…
