The Crucible is a good portrayal of the events that happened. The vulgar acts of the townspeople to these ladies is profusely obscene. This would not happen today, people may get immensely worked up over things but they would never kill people like that. In today's society we still have radicals, but law enforcement would never let this happen. The peril of what happened back then is an abomination; it is a blemish on our country. The acts of the people were incoherent to the law and everyone who participated in these perilous acts should have been prosecuted. Arthur Miller was a political advocate against the inequalities of race in America, and was very supportive to the labor unions.     The Crucible is a play constructed on conflict, lies and deception, written by Arthur Miller in 1952. The key theme of this theatrical four-act drama is ‘Wheels within wheels’. Set in Salem, in the heart of puritan Massachusetts, in 1692, the plot follows a community of villagers plagued by accusations of witchcraft. Amidst the executions of their friends, the remaining villagers turn to religion, rumours and secrets to alleviate the tragedy, and gravity of the circumstances unfolding on their doorsteps. Throughout the play, we become progressively responsive to the fact that sex/sexual repression are the motives behind a significant volume of the conflict that develops as the plot continues, as well as being a vital theme throughout the story. Although not immediately detected, as pivotal characters such as Abigail Williams, John Proctor and Elizabeth Proctor advance, it becomes apparent that the source of the deeply bedded antipathies are sex and being sexually repressed. Miller uses the theme of sexual repression to allow the audience to contextualise the era that the play was set in (1690’s Massachusetts, consumed by Puritanism), and how the characters conflicts/personas/reactions link to this. The main window that this can be seen is through Abigail Williams, the conniving, unscrupulous seventeen year old girl, who is the antagonist of the plot.…

    It is amazing how lies told by a young female in The Crucible can start so much trouble in society. In a puritan society they thought of woman as inferior to men, and that they were not capable of doing much. George Orwell who was a author and a critic once stated that,” Man is the only creature that consumes without producing. He does not give milk, he does not lay eggs, he is too weak to pull the plough, he cannot run fast enough to catch rabbits yet he is the Lord of all animals.” This quote is the perfect summary of women that are in The Crucible. They are forgotten and underappreciated in the play. Though they do so much for their husbands and have such a big part in the men’s lives, they were not given the respect they deserved. Arthur Miller took that idea and broadens it in his play The Crucible. Abigail Williams, Elizabeth Proctor, Mary Warren and many other women portray Arthur Miller’s views on women in the play. His treatment of women throughout the novel is a look at what was thought of women during that time in history. It was thought that a women’s role was to live a holy lifestyle, reproduce, and stand behind her husband at all times. The main women in the play image certain types of women and Miller uses these characters to portray his views and reflect the title of the play. Arthur Miller's The Crucible is a troubled literary work, not only because of the madness surrounded by the hangings but, because of the way that Abigail, Elizabeth, and the other women are treated at that the writing of Miller and by the comments of critics. Many people have come out spoken about their lack of enthusiasm over the treatment of these women in the play.     PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a psychiatric disorder that can occur following the experience or witnessing of life-threatening events such as the military combat, natural disasters, terrorism incidents, or any major tragedy. This is common in the life of veterans and is the leading cause of suicide among veterans. A VA patient who survived in Baghdad shares his experience with PTSD and explains how he knew he had this disability. Many veterans speak out about this issue and describe their continuous anger, alcohol addiction, and constantly wanted to fight. They usually feel very isolated and distant from their loved ones.
