The story is written by Marc Mitchell (Florence, Alabama) in 2001.

Title
The new girl. The whole story is about this situation that changed the main characters life – the situation where he met this new girl, and acted terribly against her, which “haunts” him the rest of his life.

Narrator
The story is told with a 1st person narrator. We only see and hear the story through one set of eyes – we only see it from one perspective. (Examples from text: “I lived…”)

Settings
The story takes place at a small town in Prospect Street – a white, lower-middle-class neighbourhood. It’s in the middle of the day, and we’re in the year of the 80’s because the segregation.

Time
It’s a flashback. He’s thinking about a situation that happened 20 years ago, which he also says in the end of the story.

Theme
The theme of the story is racism. As told before, the story is all about this situation where they meet the new black girl, and at first the main character wants to be friends with her – he smiles at her, and seems very welcoming, but when Allison stars being mean, he does the same. So the theme in the story is racism, and the fact that one action can haunt you all your life. (Other themes: Childhood, regret, hate, segregation, verbal abuse, injustice and fear)

Message
“Don’t judge based on race, and stop being prejudiced. Reflect/think about your actions, or you will end up with regret for the rest of your life.

Main character
Eight years old. Looks up to his best friend Allison, even though he don’t share the same interests as her (Barbies and Hall and Oates), and he isn’t really sure he likes her. They’re the only two kids in the block, so maybe that’s the reason he looks up to her – because there isn’t any other option. And maybe that’s the reason too for his action against the black girl – because he doesn’t want to loose his only friend, and therefore he has to do as she does.
