The Negative Effects Of Technology In A Sound Of Thunder By Ray Bradbury
Technology is a wonderful thing. It has enabled us to do things that in the past were unimaginable to do. Technology these days has evolved a lot and it has changed our life for the better and for the worst. When I say for the better I mean that it has made us able to contact our beloved ones that are far away from home, made us able to use this technology to save our life when we are in danger, etc. But there are some bad things that this technology is doing to us. Since the Smartphones came out almost everybody has bought one of them, and most of them are using these smartphones every day and every hour. Nowadays this technology is ruining family gatherings because everyone is so focused on their phone that nobody even shares a story beside …show more content…
And in the story accidentally steps on a butterfly and kills it, and that butterfly changed things in the future. “"All right," Travis continued, "say we accidentally kill one mouse here. That means all the future families of this one particular mouse are destroyed, right?", "Right", "And all the families of the families of the families of that one mouse! With a stamp of your foot, you annihilate first one, then a dozen, then a thousand, a million, a billion possible mice!"” (A Sound of Thunder). This part of the story tells us that one little mouse in the past could kill billions in the future, and is not all about mouse, is about the animals that feed on the mouse too. For instance “"Well, what about the foxes that'll need those mice to survive? For want of ten mice, a fox dies. For want of ten foxes a lion starves. For want of a lion, all manner of insects, vultures, infinite billions of life forms are thrown into chaos and destruction. Eventually it all boils down to this: fifty-nine million years later, a caveman, one of a dozen on the entire world, goes hunting wild boar or saber-toothed tiger for food. But you, friend, have stepped on all the tigers in that region. By stepping on one single mouse. So the caveman starves. And the caveman, please note, is not just any expendable man, no! He is an entire future nation. From his loins would have …show more content…
In the story also it tells us the consequences that Eckels went through after he changed something in the past. He stepped on a butterfly and that tiny butterfly had changed the language and the president of the United States. “His face was cold. His mouth trembled, asking: "Who - who won the presidential election yesterday?"The man behind the desk laughed. "You joking? You know very well. Deutscher, of course! Who else? Not that fool weakling Keith. We got an iron man now, a man with guts!" The official stopped. "What's wrong?"Eckels moaned. He dropped to his knees. He scrabbled at the golden butterfly with shaking fingers. "Can't we," he pleaded to the world, to himself, to the officials, to the Machine, "can't we take it back, can't we make it alive again? Can't we start over? Can't we-"He did not move. Eyes shut, he waited, shivering. He heard Travis breathe loud in the room; he heard Travis shift his rifle, click the safety catch, and raise the weapon. There was a sound of thunder.” (A Sound of

Ray Bradbury’s writing style has always been known to be poetic without being pretentious; it communicates abstract ideas with layman terms and engages our senses. (Ray Bradbury Board) I enjoy Bradbury’s use of irony in stories, but especially in A Sound of Thunder when the killing of a butterfly changes all of civilization. The short story is about this wealthy man named Eckles who pays this time traveling company to take him back to prehistoric times, so he can hunt for a dinosaur. These dinosaurs have been selected because a previous survey indicated that they would die very soon anyway. Although this supposedly gets around the ripple effect, it quite obviously does not—a flaw in logic that Bradbury himself undoubtedly recognized.…

The message Bradbury is trying convey is that even the smallest decision one makes, can be catastrophic to his/her future. Bradbury states that “...by stepping on one single mouse...you destroy a race, a people, an entire of history of life.” This explains the instigation of the “butterfly effect.” When in high school, for example, that one “F” you receive freshman year could make your dream college an impossible desire. Bradbury also writes, “...a small thing that could upset balances and knockdown a line of small dominoes, and then giant dominoes, all down the years across time...,” which demonstrates that the death of a single butterfly, as stated in the “butterfly effect,” drastically alters the future. In direct comparison, the moral…

Have you ever been in a time machine? probably not but, in the story " A Sound Of Thunder" there are time machines. Theres this guy named Eckels, and he is very careless what he does when he arrives in the past. He thinks that because, he payed $10000 to go back in time he can disrupt the past. A famous quote from Ray Bradberry in the story sais " Picking one leaf off a tree in the past can effect the president in the future". He is clearly right on the money on that quote. He is because, at the end of "A Sound Of Thunder" Eckels is at gunpoint when he comes out of the time machine. He is because, he disrupted the past when he was not supposed to. This all goes back to Ray Bradberrys quote.…

In the story "A sound of Thunder" By Ray Bradbury, the central idea is how one little thing like touching your foot in the past time could affect the people of their current time. This short story shows lots of things people need to focus on in ever day life. In the story, Eckels falls off the path and this could change the whole world. This relates to the central theme of the story because stepping off the path is just a little problem, but Eckles unknowingly causing a great problem on earth is a big problem. Also, the government will change them, or ban them from coming into the past. Travis is worried and doesn 't know what could have happened on earth. If anything is disturbed, like something as unimportant as a butterfly, terrible things could happen to earth. Eckles said "Destroy this one man, and you destroy a race, a people, an entire history of life." (Bradybury, 1990) This quote is important because they cannot destroy anything, and the dinosaurs they kill are planned, they can kill them before they die. Something the guide service didn 't know was if something good could happen. At the end of this short story Eckles asks the man behind the desk who won the election, then he answered Deutscher. This was the good president who wasn 't supposed to win. Therefore, sometimes things that you think are a problem are not.…

Bradbury shows through his repetition, the lack of sentiments have overcome the developed society. Bradbury reveals his opinion through the repetition because of the emphasis put on the story of the mouse and the byproducts of killing it. The reader hypothetically sees, through the pictures painted by the travel guide Travis, that one trivial matter and one wrong move could destroy an “entire history of life” (Bradbury 4). The problem with humanity today is, according to Bradbury, that humankind does not have the time to stop and value the cost of a life. This meaningful life has the ability to alter the state of millions and millions of lives. Through Travis the Time Safari tour guide, Bradbury shows the reader that stepping on a mouse is like “crush[ing] the Pyramids and “leaving your print” like the Grand Canyon over Eternity (Bradbury 4). Humanity goes far enough to forget about the present and not only about the future. Relationships and the bond that was once present between the people of a society have diminished so much that man is engulfed in what will happen in the next four months or year rather than the problems at present, though they are “not even born” or thought of yet (Bradbury 5).…

The advancement of technology has revolutionized the way humans exist. From the innovation of medical technology to the further development of phones and computers, it has proven to be life altering in many aspects. While it is true that the advantages of modern-day technology cannot, nor should be dismissed, some of the disadvantages must as equally importantly be acknowledged. Although many argue the contrary, there are many reasons to believe that phones, and texting in particular, can and have resulted in a disconnect within families, friendships, and an overall disconnect with the world.…

Technology has shaped and defined human activity and it has made life easier but more dangerous. As Langdon Winner explains in his piece, Technological Somnambulism, technology is a neutral tool. It can be used in a positive or a negative way. As well, Modern technology can be dangerous in many different ways. As more technology becomes available to the public, more people rely on it. This could be a problem; for example when many people want to figure something out, they will probably just type the question into Google. Technology allows us to think less about certain things, which may be easier but it “dumbs us down”. This could be considered dangerous because we may rely on technology too much and we could become lazy with our everyday rituals. With that said, technology has also helped us improve medicine and science to help cure certain diseases. Without these improvements we wouldn’t be as strong as a community. There seems to always be positive and negative things that come with technology.…

Now I am aware of the evils that are already present with the over use of technology, but I am the kind of person who wants to make a change in the world. I feel that my generation can fix this problem and make this Brave New World disappear. I also appreciate the beauty of technology. For example, there is a product called the Oculous Rift. It is a virtual reality device used for different kinds of experiences. The most prominent use is for gaming. But there is also a program on it that allows you to be given a virtual tour of space, or different countries or even fictional realms that open your imagination and to a brand new view of the world and how to appreciate it. I would recommend this device to anyone who wants to see things they haven't experienced before and feel the joy that it can bring. Obviously over use can be hurtful, but if used with prudence, it can be greatly appreciated and seen as a work of art. All good forms of technology and in one way or another a work of art. The cellphone itself is a work of art. The harmony of all these different devices coming together in one six inch long screen is just amazing. We must use technology to better ourselves and the world, but we must tread carefully and be aware of the many dangers that could place us too in the Brave New…

Eckles, who was the first character of the story, decided to go to million years ago to hunt gigantic animal. He believed he can be the first person who has hunted the Tyrannosaurus Rex. The most important point of the story is how the slight occurrence could change the future and affect the earth and people who live in the future in long term. The company sent Eckles to the past with Mr. Travis who was the safari guide in to the past and Lesperance who was Mr.travis assistant. They told Eckles that he must not go out of the path. Moreover, he couldn’t shoot any other animals except those that had been marked. Some animals had been observed by the guides of traveling in to the past and they realized that they will die soon by nature accident. By the time Eckles saw the dinosaur he got scared so much and panicked; therefore, he went out of the path on accident. Travis was so mad at Eckles because he disobeyed him and stepped out of the path. He threatened Eckles that he either will take out the bullet from Tyrannosaurus’ body, or he will shoot Eckles. Travis explained them they can’t leave anything in the past because they don’t know how it will affect the future. He believed that killing even a mouse or destroying a plant could ruin nature circle and influence next fauna’s generations. When they came back to their own time they realized slight differences. Spelling was different; the reception looked slightly different. Also the result of the recent election had changed. And a guy, whom they believe is dictator, won the election. Eckles looked at his boot and saw the mud on it. When he looked more closely he noticed that he stepped on a butterfly.…

It lights homes, makes transportation easy, makes research simple, and entertains. Although it has many benefits, technology also has negative side effects. Furthermore, technology is addicting- society has become too dependent on it. A day without iPhones would probably be almost impossible for some. The next generation is being raised amongst all of this technology, and they aren’t being taught like the past generations were. Will this result in catastrophe later? Many people seem to be obsessed with technology. According to a mother of three teenagers named Susan Maushart, her children “inhabit” media. She said “Did I say they do their schoolwork like that? Correction. They do their life like that.”(Maushart, Winter) This is true for a lot of people out there that use technology. Everything they do has to be done with technology or include technology in some sort of way. Susan knows her children would rather go without food, water or hair products voluntarily instead of electronic media. (Maushart, Winter) Everywhere they go they take technology with them, it’s the last thing they’ll forget to take. Even Susan admits sneaking her iPhone into the toilet. (Maushart, Winter) The obsession with technology has gotten to the point that the last thing they check before going to sleep and firs thing they check when waking up is their cellphone or any other electronic device. Obsession with technology has been creating dependency issues with the ones who most use it. Any obsession is not good, and once that can damage our whole society, known as technology is even…
