Iago, a manipulating con-artist seeks revenge upon Othello for not appointed him as a high-ranking general in the Venetian army. Othello, is the main protagonist in the play written by William Shakespeare. Othello is a well-respected and noble general in the Venetian army. Iago, one of Othello’s “friends”, despises Othello simply due to the fact that Othello had recently given a Lieutenant Promotion position to Michael Cassio. Even though Iago had quite a bit of in-battle experience, Iago thought that giving such a promotion to someone who had no in-battle experience what so ever was an insult. Early on in the play, it is incredibly easy to see that Iago will do whatever it takes to ruin Othello’s life and take away everything that he has earned. …show more content…
Iago is even able to manipulate Roderigo to do his dirty work, disguising the dirty work with having an outcome that will be beneficial for Roderigo. Roderigo is under the impression that if he and Iago are able to fill Othello of jealousy and rage in hopes that they will divorce, or part ways in a peaceful way. Thus giving Roderigo the opportunity to marry the woman he loves. Iago also adds quite a bit of vulgarity to his character with lines such as, “making the best with two backs” (1.1. 121-122). The meaning of this line would be similar to Iago saying that Othello and Desdemona are having sex at this very

Out of revenge, Iago successfully planted a seed of jealousy into Othello’s mind when in the garden he insinuated that Cassio and Desdemona were having an affair. Iago implied to Othello to check on his wife, Desdemona, one morning and see what she was up to. Othello decided to go, when he and Iago got to the garden of Othello’s house, they saw Cassio, who ran away from Desdemona after seeing Othello. Cassio was asking Desdemona if she can ask Othello to forgive him for the incident of the night before, which was the cause that made Othello to fire Cassio from the military. As Cassio was leaving the scene Iago said to Othello, “Wasn’t that Cassio that just left your wife? He looked guilty and ran when he saw you.” Then when Desdemona tried to talk to Othello about forgiving Cassio, he did not want to talk about it. Iago implied to Othello that Desdemona and Cassio knew each other long ago, before she met Othello. Iago told Othello that Desdemona and Cassio were so close to each other that they were like boyfriend and girlfriend long ago. The imagery associated with the central theme of jealousy suggests destructive, terrifying and perhaps unnatural qualities of this emotion. It is ‘the green-eyed monster, which doth mock / the meat it feeds on’. There is a strong sense of devouring and being devoured in these images, which fits in with Iago’s description of Othello as being ‘eaten up with passion’. These lines suggest the exact quality of Othello’s monumental jealousy; once he becomes convinced that his wife is unfaithful, his jealousy does indeed feed on itself, leading the protagonist to become dehumanised and animalistic. Jealousy is also deeply humiliating in ‘Othello’; Iago is correct when he says that it is ‘a passion most unsuiting such a man’. There are three examples of jealousy that are explored by Shakespeare in ‘Othello’. Iago’s personal and professional jealousy, which is linked to feelings of envy and sets events in motion. This is demonstrated through the use of soliloquy where Iago expresses his hate and jealousy of Cassio when he was given a position that Iago thought he should have gained. The use of soliloquy adds dramatic tension as Iago expresses his motive for revenge to the audience before enacting out his plans on the unsuspecting characters. The second example is of Bianca’s suspicions, which help Iago with his manipulation of the Othello adding to the dramatic tension and the third example of jealousy is of the Moors towering jealousy. Othello’s character arc is somewhat depended on his…

The main characteristics of Iago are that he is selfish, deceptive, and he lacks even the smallest bit of concern for others. Everything Iago does is to benefit himself or any plans he has set in motion. He lies to nearly everyone, often using others as pawns. To put it simply: Iago is the stereotypical dastardly villain. Iago’s whole reason for enacting his plan to ruin Othello and everyone close to him was over simple jealousy. Othello chose Cassio to be his lieutenant rather than Iago; and Iago sees it that Othello did this because Cassio is wealthier and of higher social class than him. In Act One, Scene One, Iago says to Roderigo, that Cassio “never set a squadron in the field” and that he is “Mere prattle, without practice, in his soldiership”. What he is saying here is that Iago is not as qualified as he to be Othello’s lieutenant. Because of his jealousy of this incident, Iago sets a plan in motion to bring down Othello, Cassio, and even Othello’s wife Desdemona.…

The theme of jealousy is perfectly portrayed by the captivating character Othello, and the effects the grasping emotion has on him. Through Iago’s calculated manipulation, Othello is persuaded to believe that his wife has been unfaithful to him. The lie causes Othello to become infuriatingly jealous, frustrated, and unable to control these emotions. This is shown through his use of repetition when he demands “O, blood, blood, blood,” metaphorically wishing his revenge by the deaths of Desdemona and Cassio, whom he believes have been disloyal. As you can see, this wild emotion takes hold of Othello and causes havoc on his relationships, as he wishes death upon his once beloved wife and close friend.…

Tragedy- it brings the great, the great, the remote and the impossible to an equality with the little, the real and the near. Shakespeare’s Othello is one such tragedy, a play which explores the complexity of human emotion in its many forms. The theme of jealousy plays a strong role in shaping the tragic events of the play, however it must be said that tragedy alone is not the cause of Othello’s downfall. The relationship between Othello and Iago is built on friendship. The basis of this relationship is built on loyalty and trust under the main scheme of revenge. On one side is Othello’s complete faith and trust in Iago. While on the other side is Iago’s pretence of love and loyalty which is suppressed by feelings of jealousy, anger and hate. Iago strategized a well structured plot to destroy Othello. Iago’s hatred for Othello came about when Cassio got appointed the position of lieutenant which Iago believed he rightfully deserved for he is more experienced than Michael Cassio who has “never set a squadron in the field, nor the division of a battle knows more than a spinster” unless he seeks the “bookish theoric”. Iago makes it his mission to punish Othello for his supposed betrayal and make Cassio and Desdemona the subject of revenge.…

If a monster with green eyes were coming at an individual, what would one do? The answer of course, depends on the circumstances of that particular person. Would one permit the green-eyed monster to destroy his or her own mind, and control his or her every move? In this case the green-eyed monster would indeed be jealousy. so lets use Iago for example. He was prejudice towards the African American, othello, to whom he held a lower military position; a less qualified man, Cassio, was promoted as Othello's lieutenant, and he wasn't high in social classes. Iago's life was excruciatingly unsatisfactory and Iago welcomed the green-eyed monster with is arms wide open. First of all, why does one feel a need for control over others? Besides jealousy, could ones own life not be going the way they would like? Iago didn't have power over anything. The only thing he had power over was his emotions, and he couldn't even control them. He says, and I quote, "Tis in ourselves that we are thus or thus. Our bodies are our gardens, to which our wills are gardeners " In translation, it means only we have control over out internal selves. We are also the only one's who can take control over our feelings. As soon as Iago put his scheme into action, he saw results: "Now art thou my lieutenant." Iago had Othello under his control, just as he anticipated. Iago told lies to Othello and to try and convince him to bring his own wants to life; one being lieutenant for Othello. Additionally, how could a person be so cruel? Iago was ruthless and surmounted by jealousy, selfishness, prejudice, and he was also spiteful. Iago had said, "I have it. It is engendered. Hell and night must bring this world's light ." Iago was referring to his cruel scheme designed to destroy Othello's life. How selfish of Iago to want to impose his cruel lies and actions on these somewhat good, unsuspecting people.…

The main character of Othello is undoubtedly a true image of the effects of jealousy. His character shows the destruction that jealousy can cause. As the play unfolds we see his calm nature digress and turn him into an angry monster. Emilia comments to Desdemona that “They are not jealous for the cause,/But jealous because they are jealous” in a warning that Othello’s temper will not be tamed once he is consumed by jealousy because he believes Desdemona to have been unfaithful to him which as we later in the play see is true. Othello’s jealousy “will not be answered” because he refuses to believe Desdemona’s plea’s of innocence which later leads to his murder of her and his own suicide. Othello also shows the connections between jealousy and madness. When Othello is over come by his jealousy he falls down in a fit of rage and Iago observes how “he foams at the mouth and...Breaks out into savage madness,” the connotations of “foam at the mouth” is that of being a rabid dog therefore dehumanising Othello and suggesting his has regressed to a state that is lower than human in the chain of being.…
