The Man to Send Rain Clouds
In the story “The Man to Send Rain Clouds” we see a balance between life and death. When the man in the story dies, instead of being full of sorrow and regret, the people are grateful that the man will send rain clouds down from above to water their crops. So, in dying Ken, Leon, and Louise do not seem to be fazed at all that there grandfather had just passed away. They seem to just go on with their lives and show no emotion about what had just happened.
When Ken and Leon find the body of their grandfather under the big cottonwood tree they seem to handle the situation rather well. When they discovered the body, which has apparently been lying under the tree for at least a day Leon and Ken herd the sheep back to the camp and return by truck to the body. They don’t seem to be saddened at all which a lot of people in that situation would be. They just go right along with tying a feather in the old man's white hair and painting his face. When Leon is finished painting he steps back and smiles at the face of his grandfather showing no emotion and asks the old man to send some rain clouds.
The only character that showed any emotion at all in the story “the Man to Send Rain Clouds” was the priest. When Leon tells Father Paul that his grandfather has passed away father is upset that he was not notified earlier so that he could have performed the last rights and a funeral mass. The only thing Leon wants is Father Paul to throw holy water on the body so that it would bring good luck. Leon`s wife thought it would be a good idea that father Paul bless Teofilo`s body because she thought it would be good luck and Teofilo would send the rain clouds so there crops could grow and they would have a good harvesting season. Teofilo sending the rain clouds was all they really seemed to care about.

"Of course I don 't have my underwear. I 'm definitely not wearing my underwear.... These are not boxer shorts. Mine are boxer shorts. These are Hanes 32... My boxer shorts have my name and it says Raymond...I get my boxer shorts at K-Mart in Cincinnati". (Rain Man, 1988) This quote from the popular movie Rain Man perfectly captures the disorder that plagues Raymond Bobbitt, one of the main characters. He is a very particular man who must always do everything on a schedule; any disruption in this schedule completely turns his world upside down. He shows very little emotion, unless something happens to upset him, in which case he completely melts down. His behavior is almost that of a young child. However, he also has a very unique gift. He has an absolutely astounding memory and can recall the smallest details from events that occurred when he was just a young child. At one…

In “An Hour or Two Sacred to Sorrow” by Richard Steele, Steele tells his story, advocating the mourning of a loved one’s death, deeming it acceptable because of the positive memories, between the late and the late’s beloved, recalled; the acceptance of other’s help will aid them past the pain. Steele was five years of age when his father passed away. Oblivious to the situation, he felt sorrow from watching his mother grieve. Steele explains that infants’ individuality is replaced with influences from their surroundings, which explains the feeling of sorrow he felt at such a young age in spite of the fact that he had no grasp of the situation. Although humans know death approaches, they still lament over deaths; “thus we groan under life, and…

"Good morning, Father. We were just out to the sheep camp. Everything is O.K. now." (Silko 694) Silko alters the short story to accommodate the process of cultural assertion and adaptation. The simplicity of her style seems a strange, unconventional way of storytelling. Silko does not describe her characters physically or psychologically, or develop much sense of individual personality. Ken and Leon say almost nothing to each other and almost nothing about themselves. Ken and Leon say nothing when they find Teofilo dead, in spite of the devastating event. The only thing said is “Send us rain clouds, Grandfather” (Silko 694) Among the Pueblo characters, there is only one short exchange, in which Louise tells Ken that she had been thinking about having the priest sprinkle holy water for her grandpa so he will not be…

In Situations much like Richard Cory's, we as outsiders don't know how they are and what they are truly going through. It's one of the scariest things, one day we see a person and the next we find out that they're gone. We hear things like: ‘Oh she/he was such a happy person, they had everything.' But what we fail to realize is that everything is nothing when a person isn't internally happy.…

How would you react to the idea that someone in your family was dying? Would you sit by them until the end? What about your view on death itself? Do you think that there is some sort of afterlife, where your spirit outlives your body but you continue to live? Perhaps you simply believe that you are trapped in an eternal slumber. There are many different views on the concept of death, as well as the behavior that should be reflected upon when you’re facing death, as with a family member. Though there may be countless opinions on this topic, As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner does a wonderful job of expressing many of these opinions not only about death and the afterlife, but about the actions of people as they watch a family member being slowly consumed by it. Using Faulkner’s unique narration style, we are able to get a better understanding through the views of multiple characters. In this way, we can analyze the topic by character based on their own opinions.…

To be accepted into the modern world, the Pueblo people in the story “the Man to Send Rain Clouds” have adapted to the Western culture that surrounds them, but only to a certain degree. They have learned how to keep important traditions alive, while combining new aspects of the Western culture and without changing completely. One of the traditions the Pueblo people did not change was the way they conducted a ceremony for a loved one who has passed. This tradition is the main conflict in this story. Between Leon and Father Paul, the conflict revolved around the burial of Teofilo, Leon’s grandfather. Father Paul was mad at Leon for not informing him of his grandfather’s death. In a Christian burial, the priest is to perform Last Rites and a funeral…

In these two, it is evident that death was a time when one showed emotions. In Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Tom drew on his faith which allowed him to handle Eva’s death. He believed that she was going to a better place and he would see her again. The reason others cannot cope was because they did not have faith and did not trust God. They wanted their way, not God’s way. In Little Women, Beth was almost portrayed as too angelic to belong on Earth. Beth accepted that she was supposed to die, but Jo was not as accepting. Jo absorbed the positive qualities of her sister. The survivors gained insights into life. That was why Jo would be better. Also, Eva’s death led to a bedside conversion. The bystanders to these “Good Deaths” come out as better people. “Good Death” was good for those who experienced it because it could influence…

Emotion and compassion are two main actions that are supposed to be expressed when a person dies. In The Stranger, Mersault’s mother passes away and so he takes a bus to the funeral home where his mother’s body is. At the funeral he did not cry or even get upset over the passing of his mother, almost like he didn’t care about her. A similar situation occurs in Office Space, Peter is at a hypnotherapist’s office receiving treatment from the doctor, all of sudden the doctor has a heart attack and all Peter does is watch the surrounding people try to help the doctor. These two situations show the same indifference for the world by not caring or showing emotion towards someone that is in danger or passed away. Peter and Mersault having no emotion in those types of situations are contradictory to the societal standard. The people around Peter and Mersault at the time of the incidents criticize their actions of…

The play does not show or explain their deaths, they simply cease to exist, the audience only hears about it after. This can suggest their deaths weren't important enough to show, highlighting them as insignificant. This links to the futility of human existence as it suggests that people aren't important in this vast world. After the World War II when people lost faith in religion, they feared what came after death, or if there was anything at all. Stoppard highlights these fears, leaving questions unanswered about where we go after death and what is the purpose of…

When losing someone or something valuable, people are usually angry, or upset at the world. During this time, many mixed emotions and a lot of frustration is present. Frustration gives way to anger, and it can cause people to lash out and lay unwarranted blame for the death on someone or something else. Anger can present itself in a lot of ways that may include anger at loved one for “leaving too soon”, at others, and even at God for allowing this to happen. Anger can sometimes turn into guilt, guilt that something else could have been done and the loved one would have remained on this earth. (Lancaster…
