There Will Come Soft Rain

In the short story There Will Come Soft Rains the tones, narrators, and time that make up the story are unique to its author. The tones are related to isolated, solitary, and composed. While the narrators are from a third person point of view, the family, and the lonely house while telling the story from a chronological standpoint.
Throughout the story we read and feel many different tones from the story. The most obvious is the feeling of loneliness and solitude. In the beginning of the reading the it reads “The house stood alone in a city of rubble and ashes. This was the one house left standing.” (Bradbury 1). As we see in the story the home is alone. In this first excerpt from the story it is confirmed that the house is the only thing left in a destroyed world, and because it is all that is left the reader can get the tone of isolated. The main narrator tells the story from a third person point of view. Everything that is known is told from an all knowing voice. While reading the story Ray Bradbury makes it easy to understand that the narrator is more than the talking house. From a part in the story “It sniffed the air and scratched the kitchen door. Behind the door, the stove was making pancakes which filled the house with a rich baked odor and the scent of maple syrup. The dog frothed at the mouth, lying at the door, sniffing, its eyes turned to fire.” (Bradbury 2)This part is interesting because of the use of detail in the senses. The narrator talks to us through his senses and describes the surroundings very vividly. This narrator also gives us certain descriptions that only a person outside of the house could tell us, and since there is no one left to tell us what is happening it must be from the view of a third person
