The Lady Or The Tiger
The story, The Lady or the Tiger?, is about a boy who falls in love with a princess. The princess and her father are both semi-barbaric. The king does not approve of his daughters affair. Why you may ask. Because the boy is a peasant. Princesses may only date other princes. I would say that that is unfair to the princess. You cannot control who you fall in love with. According to the story ,”There lived a semi-barbaric king; whose ideas, though somewhat polished and sharpened by the progressiveness of distant Latin neighbors, were still large, florid, and untrammeled. In this story if you commit a crime, the king sends you to an arena. Where everyone is there to watch you. In the arena there are two doors for you to choose from. One has a …show more content…
As you could suspect, the king did not like for his daughter to date a peasant boy. The king believed that his way of serving justice is fair. I bet the men in the arena beg to differ. Also, I believe that is unfair. When the princess found out that her father threw her love in the arena she immediately tried to find out which door was which. Since she is the princess you would think that I would be fairly easy to find which was which. It was. When it is time for her loves trial to begin she goes. You would think that she would not want to see her love get mauled by a tiger or get married to someone she hates. But, she comes anyways. Her love seemed to know that she knew which door was which, so he asked. She simply pointed to the door on the right. I believe that when he opened the door the tiger came out. Why? Because she disliked the woman that was behind the door. You could say that she even hated her. I understand her feelings. You would not want to see the person you love get married to the person you hate. She would rather him die than be with the maiden. I guess you could say that the princess was fueled by jealousy and

Within this story, the royal family is given distinguishing traits that explain why the princess would choose death upon her lover. Because she is the daughter of a “semi-barbaric king” (Stockton 2), the thought of her companion getting eaten by a tiger might be more accepting than losing him to another woman. The princess’s uncivilized mind would overrule the appropriate decision, and choose the tiger.…

The princess in “The Lady or the Tiger” struggles when determining the youth’s fate either consisting of death or marriage to another beautiful lady as she contemplates “Which [door to open. The answer is] as plain to her as if [the youth] shouted it from where he stood. There was not an instant to be lost. The question [of which door to open] was asked in a flash; it must be answered in another” (Stockton 302). The princess is forced to decide the youth’s fate in a split second. The short amount of time that is taken for her to make her decision suggests that her emotions may have overruled reason and could lead to her regretting her decision later in life. In a single second, lives could be drastically changed. Up until the last moment, the youth, that the princess had loved, believes that she will spare him; he has a blind faith in the princess and trusts in her choices. The king’s daughter’s heart is torn during this point of decision. She must decide whether she would prefer to see the youth dead or with the lady whom she…

I think that the princess probably would have let her lover die. One soul or not, I don't think she wanted anyone else to have him if she couldn't have him for herself. Also, I say this because the princess loathed and despised the woman behind one of the doors, the woman who, if selected, would marry…

In the princess’s lover’s situation, she would have sent him to the lady due to her barbarism, love, and grief. There are many cases proving that the semi-barbaric princess chose the lady. "She loved the man with an ardor that kept their love exceedingly warm and strong", therefore she would want to keep him alive no matter what(363). "She had done what no other person had done, and possessed herself the secret of the doors"(363-364). Her obtaining the secret showed that she cared for him very dearly.…

The king is seen as very selfish in this lay. He has used his daughter as, “a comfort,” since his wife died. Besides the fact that he was incestuous, he was only thinking of his own pleasure and happiness. Did he ever stop to think of the emotional toil his actions had on his daughter? Furthering his selfish motives, he wanted, “to prevent anyone seeking his daughter’s hand.” The king wanted his daughter all to himself and would go to extreme lengths to keep it that way. Even if having the love of…

Because she is clearly in love with him, she seems to stand firm on her opinion that the thought of another woman being with him is sickening. Finally, the princess believes that it would be less complicated if he were to die so that she may see him again in the afterlife. The princess was repulsive toward the idea of the ‘young man’ being with another woman. Therefore, if he were to die by the hands (or paws; tee hee) of the tiger, then they could be together in the afterlife. Furthermore, it was illegal for a servant/peasant to be in love with the princess; therefore, making the decision easier. If the two lovers cannot be together while they were alive, then they could be together in the afterlife when the two of them had both passed. In conclusion, the princess signaled for the ‘young man’ to open the door with the tiger because: the princess was semi-barbaric and relished in the sight of blood/violence, she was more afraid of seeing the ‘young man’ with another woman, and they could simply be with one another in the afterlife (due to the laws that outlaw all romance between royalty and non-royalty.) So the next person that is to read the shocking story, choose correctly when given the honoring opportunity to select the…

How often in her grievous reveries had she gnashed her teeth, torn her hair, when she saw his start of rapturous delight as he opened the door of the lady!” The author shows that the princess is torn by the decision, and has many conflicting opinions on the matter. On the one hand, she would hate to see her lover die, but on the other, it may be worse for him to be seen happy with another. This creates tension because it leaves the reader with little to no clues about which door she will choose. Furthermore, the author does not answer the question of which door the princess will open at all, instead ending with, “The question is one not to be lightly considered, and it is not for me to set myself up as the one person able to answer it.” This creates suspense because the reader has no certain answer as to which door the princess chose. The short story “The Lady or the Tiger?” creates tension and suspense by leaving the audience wondering about which door the princess…

With all due respect, I think #3 needs to look at the quoted section of text more closely. " How in her grievous reveries had she gnashed her teeth, and torn her hair, when she saw his start of rapturous delight as he opened the door of the lady!" The princess did not want him to find happiness with anyone else. She had a barbaric nature, and she knew that the beautiful young woman had cast glances upon her lover, and she had perceived those…

After reading Frank R. Stockton's story, "The Lady or the Tiger", I found that the princess was in dismay caught between the turmoil of love and jealousy. She had an intimate love for the boyfriend, but her semi barbaric mind set along with her jealous nature endlessly swayed and clouded her mind. Her father king added fuel to the flame of her jealousy and aimed the punishment towards her, not so much at her lover. This was evident in the passage of the story that exclaimed, "... she knew who the lady was.…

This puts her vindictive nature on full display, while showing her selfish side also. She believes that being the cause for the death of another human being is better than her lover having a happy and fulfilling life with another woman. Along the same lines, the princess hates the woman behind the door because she believes she has seen her admiring her lover, and also on more than one occasion has caught the two talking, although of what she does not know. This causes her to allow the id to take full control, while also silencing the ego and any rational thoughts about the situation. The princess attends the trial and suggests to her lover which door to open, causing the trial to go exactly as she…
