The Influence Of Battery Cages
Battery cages
How have the demands of consumers influenced the way farmers manage their egg industry in Australia?
Battery cages are cages in which farmers use in the egg industry to house hens. Around 8 to 10 hens are confined in the space about the size of a cabinet drawer. The eggs are laid onto wire cage floors and roll to the front of the cage for collection. Battery cages are stacked in rows on top of each other, so within a single building, hundreds of thousands of birds are housed. The wire floors are sloped at an angle so that the eggs are able to roll out of the cages. Although farmers can easily take advantage of this method of egg production as it reduces risks of disease, provides protection from predators and costs lower,

This leads to death of the bird because they cannot access food or water. The birds are ab lib fed with pellets and drinking water is usually supplied by nipple drinkers. They are also not provided with perches or nesting materials. Hens have to endure the pains of feather loss and red sore patches of skin from having to continually stretch their neck through the bars of the cage in the attempt to reach for food at the front. The chickens eventually develop inflamed and raw chests without any feathers after one year. This also affects the tail and neck area and horribly by the end of their lives (which are very short) the majority of hens kept in battery cages have lost the majority of their …show more content…

First, every household in America should have free range backyard chickens because they provide great nutrition. Free range eggs from your backyard have seven times the Vitamin A and almost double the Vitamin E. They also have 292mg of the fatty acid Omega 3 versus the 0.033mg in caged chickens. That's a huge difference. Free range eggs also have less saturated fat. Caged chickens are fed a diet of corn, soy and cottonseed meals. These are three huge genetically modified organisms. As I said before the farmers drug the animals to make the process go faster but in the end it can possibly kill or severely injure the animals. Sometimes in severe cases farmers have to cut of chickens beaks so that when the chickens get in a fight they will not kill each other with their beaks. When the animals are stuck in a stall all day they do not get to experience the outdoors or do normal animal activities. The animals get very stressed and do not produce as well as they would if they did normal animal activities.…

The changes in land use and decreased wetland access for migrating fowl may lead to larger fowl densities, flock, stress, and closer proximity to domesticated flocks. It is also suggested that the climate such as changes in temperature or increased areas suffering from drought may have an impact. Migrating fowl tend to congregate where here is more water. Another impact on the environment is the increased consumption of chicken which has tripled between 1960 and 2002 (Vandegrift, 2010). With a higher demand for poultry production, farmers have increased the number of birds on their farms. With a larger poultry population in a smaller area, there is an increased potential for easier transmission between flocks and the possibility of the virus becoming an…

In actuality factory farmed animals, chickens especially, are being bred at such a high rate most of them will never spend one day outside of their 16 x 16 cell. According to a study conducted on Factory-Farming.com chickens kept in such conditions have been reported to be limited from fully extending its legs, or wings. For a full grown chicken or hen, the cell doesn’t allow them to even completely turn around. Confining these animals to conditions like this has led to severe bruising, abrasions on the animals body from constant rubbing against wire, and in some cases even feather loss. These animals aren’t being exposed to the proper amount of exercise because the farmer wants all the animals’ energy to be directed towards growing, or laying eggs for human consumption. The animals are fed hormones and drugs to fatten them up and make them grow bigger, they are also genetically altered to grow faster making them produce more eggs and milk then natural. In some cases the hen may become crippled by its own weight and dies. These animals will never have a day outside of a cage, raise families, or even feel…

    * That statement means that they don’t think of chickens as animals anymore. Right from the moment they’re laid (as eggs), they are thought of as food. I completely disagree with the statement, and this might affect the way chickens are raised by the point of view of the workers and officials (and what have you). If we keep thinking that these chickens are not animals, but are merely food for ourselves and our consumers, the process of making chickens might become more inhumane as it evolves to become even more efficient.…
