About 86% of all the citizens who watch Olympic Wrestling or have heard of it do not want wrestling to be taken away. Wrestling is one of the oldest sports known to man that is admirable, it creates deposition and teaches men, women, and children how to work hard for something that they want to achieve and be the best at it. Injuries are very rare in wrestling, most occur only when a player is not safe with the other player or if they want to intentionally hurt them. In an article stated by a viewer, he states, “Encourages violence? Please! Anyone who says that wrestling encourages violence has no idea at all of what they are talking about… Never in wrestling is there the intent to injure your opponent. It is a test of strength and endurance, and there are injuries in all contact sports for all types of reasons, you cannot single out wrestling.” (www.debate.org)The people who wrestle do not wrestle for an intention to hurt anybody but an intention to win, have fun and savor what they are doing. A 14 year old kid used to bully and hurt others in his school, but he wanted to do wrestling so his dad put him in it and his coach taught him self respect, self esteem, and he stopped bullying. He didn’t hurt others anymore, he helped them and respected them. The parent of the 14 year old states, “My son age 14 had anger, rage and was a bully yes a bully. Few sports encompass the battle of human bodies and wills quite like the sport of wrestling does. Two opponents of equal size, with little equipment, and no goal other than to physically dominate your opponent. Ask any wrestler, however, and they will tell you that this “physical” battle is 90% mental- more about breaking and outlasting your opponent rather than feats of physical strength. Press that same wrestler a little further, and they will admit that the toughest battle is not actually with the person standing on the line across from you, but rather within your own mind and body. The fact that wrestlers drop a lot of weight before competition, (sometimes using harmful methods) is well-known, but few people understand the full process…

Let me tell you a story about Dan Gable and how he saved wrestling. He was in the second grade. His dad was taking him to a wrestling tournament in Des Moines. All the people in the area were starting to quit wrestling and started to play basketball. It was Dan’s last chance to save wrestling before he would be the only wrestler left in the area. His family had wrestled for all their life. Dan want for his kids and their kids to wrestle like he had, so wrestling would still be in their family.…

This event was Ringside: Memories of World Class Championship Wrestling beginning at 9 am on October 13. I chose this event because I wanted to understand the background of wrestling. I use to watch it on television, but it seemed better looking at pictures with a descriptive meaning. I enjoyed the atmosphere of the art gallery and how I felt welcomed walking in the gallery. The description of each picture made you feel like you were exactly present throughout each picture. I learned that wrestling is actually a fun sport. I also learned about two related wrestlers, Kevin and Kerry Von Erich. It was very interesting learning about their background history of their wrestling memories.…

Wrestling is a perfect Olympic sport for the modern world. It is a combination of speed, strength, agility, hard work, and dedication. Because of these traits, wrestlers in general are better, harder working individuals than non wrestlers. Also, wrestling is a coeducational sport meaning that both men and women can compete in it (albeit separately in the Olympics). These factors combine to make wrestling the perfect sport for the world to join in together for competition. The removal of wrestling from the Olympics may remove a large motivating factor for dedicated wrestlers to work hard. As the great wrestler and coach Dan Gable once said, “[o]nce you’ve wrestled, everything else in life is easy”. This quotation personifies the soul of wrestling and shows that wrestling is the perfect sport for a hard-working, motivated society.…

It is no surprise that America thrives on entertainment provided to us by the media, even at the expense of others’ welfare; a preeminent example is boxing. Constantly, everywhere arenas are filled each night by the public who anticipate being able to witness a possible fight of a lifetime. Although those who come out to see the invigorating performance do not all root for the same competitor, there is only one reason people truly come out to watch such barbaric acts, and that is the one thing that the fans all have in common. Of course if the competitor of one’s favor comes out in victory, it automatically is a reason for celebration, but the real reason that the arena is filled and the crowd goes wild is because of the knockout. Excitement is built up not by the fighter but by the idea of seeing a good show. No one eggs on the dodging, weaving, or dancing around the opponent’s fists, the fans only encourage what they solely come to see which are punches being thrown; there is no concern at all about the aftermath or the condition of the fighter, just the pure satisfaction of feeling entertained.…

Wrestling; when most people hear the word, they imagine a hefty man with bulging muscles in a skimpy singlet, throwing other men across the mat. In reality, this is not the case for all wrestlers. They don’t all have hulk like physiques. No one could have imagined a small, lean 5’3 girl like myself be a wrestler. Barely weighing over 100 pounds, I struggle with the dirty looks and glares I get. The news spread like wildfire around my gossip-loving-school that there was a girl on the wrestling team. My peers questioned me with disbelief. They inquired with bulging eyes ,”you’re the girl on the wrestling team?”…

I had a rough draft made, but I decided it didn't go with how I was feeling with everything going on. I decided to write the paper that would prove to my mother why I should continue to do wrestling. I had many ideas that I wrote down like quotes that apply, but I didn't realize till after I wrote the ideas down, that I was wasting too much time thinking of what to write than actually typing the paper. I thought about the people that made me realize that I want to continue to wrestling. I got the sense of why wrestling can help me learn things that I can use for the future. "It's that kind of sport where you look in the mirror and you either see a winner or a loser" I was told from a wise man I met at a wrestling match. Learning to be confident is part of winning or losing a match. Usually whoever put more hours of work into wrestling, it's a most guaranteed win. But everybody makes mistakes and that's when part of confidence comes in. Wrestling teaches many things that other sports doesn't always. I think it's one of the hardest, but most rewarding sports anyone can participate in. "Always improving" my coach always tells me. Like in writing my teacher explains, "It's never finished; it's just due." I'm starting to fathom how wrestling applies to many things in…

One thing that I have learned from wrestling is self-confidence. It is just me out there against my opponent and no one to help me. So I learned to believe in myself because I would accomplish things that I didn't think I could do. Last year I was wrestling a kid from Capital who won state the year before I was nervous to wrestle him. Well it was a close match and I was down by one point with only a few seconds left on the clock. But I finally just took my chance and hit a sweet double leg takedown to win the match. Wrestling has showed me that you are responsible for your own success. It has also taught me to take my shot no matter what. It doesn't matter the outcome whether it is winning or losing if I knew I put my all into what I just did. Then I would be proud and not hang my head and pout.…

Finding an innate passion is a process in which every individual goes through in their lifetime. Coming from a family that lives, breathed, and bleeds wrestling, most people would quickly assume that I myself would hold an inborn fondness with the sport of wrestling. This statement from my eyes is partially correct, as I do have a love for the sport itself. However, to pursue the sport of wrestling first handedly takes an ambition that I myself simply do not posses. Ultimately, I simply don’t have the drive and passion to compete in such a brutal, meticulous sport.…

Kids doing MMA is a sport which contains anger and should not be allowed until a certain age. It is a violent sport. However, violence is referred to as, use of excessive physical force, which causes or has obvious potential to cause harm or destruction. Kids doing MMA is obviously absurd, and violent, but how violent is it? The referees are there to prevent a serious amount of damage to a child’s well being. This fighting form is also legal, and parents sign their kids up for it themselves, it isn’t random. Yes it goes against the social norm, but who does not want a kid that is stronger, and more powerful than his peers? Aggressive children obviously have the upper hand in the sport, but remember, it is a sport. This activity could reflect later down the road, possible having a child with anger issues, and is violent outside of the sport. Intimidation is a big part of MMA, and children are very susceptible to fear. If a child loses a fight, it could ruin his confidence for a lifetime, let alone the physical damage he/she could obtain during the match. Much of the fighting is classified as “brutal body contact”, which is common in many sports: Football, basketball, soccer, etc. Brutal body contact involves collisions, hits, anything that contacts the body in a harmful, painful manner. Does MMA take over the ethics of sports though? It is a competitive sports, which you inflict injury on your opponent purposely, trying to make them quit or give up. MMA is frowned upon, but rugby is not, and rugby is almost, if not more brutal than actual fighting. The collisions in rugby are very forceful, and unprotected. Many may see MMA as good television, but many do not know the physical damage one could receive immediately, or throughout the long run.…
