Narrative Essay: The Hunt It was six a.m. when I woke up to the sound of my alarm clock. I quickly hopped out of bed and threw on my orange hunting clothes. Surprisingly, my parents were dressed and ready to leave. We jumped in my father’s silver Dodge and drove west.
We finally made it do our destination, a low field full of washes and sagebrush that we locals call James’s. My father put the truck to a halt, and he raised his binoculars to his eyes. “Deer,” I heard him say. My mother and I also put our binoculars up. We saw about fifteen Does, which are female deer that we can’t shoot. My dad still decided to sit and watch for a while, and we ended up seeing one with

Finally, I decided I would go after the small two point. I got out of the truck and walked a big loop around the herd of deer, so I could sneak up behind them. As soon as I got to where I thought they would be, I started walking very slowly, rolling my feet from my heels to my toes. Finally, I saw an ear poke up from behind the brush about twenty feet away. It was a doe. I stopped and kept quiet for about five minutes until she bent back down to continue eating. I continued walking towards the deer, I felt like I had never been quieter in my life. I was ten feet away from those deer, and they had no idea I was there. I still couldn’t even see the rest because they were still laying down. I purposely made a noise with my foot, just to startle them so I could get a good look at what my options were. A deer stood up right in front of me, with one single pointed antler on the right side of his head. I pulled the radio from my belt and said, “Should I shoot it?” My dad replied, “no I wouldn’t he’s pretty small.” So I didn’t. And to my surprise after all that noise I was making that dumb deer was still standing there looking at me, still ten feet

We set up and went to bed early. I could hardly sleep. The whole night is kind of a blur, but the next morning around 5:00, my dad woke me up and we all set out into the darkness. Hiking up to the area where we thought the elk would be, we saw a huge, 8 point bull elk, but it was before shooting light and we had to let him run off. After this, my dad and I found a small meadow in and sat down to wait for shooting light. As the meadow filled with light, we heard tons of shots all around, but mostly down the hill below us, we saw nothing, so after an hour or so, we moved on. After a while trekking through some thick brush, we found a clearing. The cycle of hiking, waiting, and seeing nothing repeated itself a few times. Then, in the closing minutes of daylight, we came across Kotchwar, who had downed a cow elk an hour before. We all headed back to the spike camp. Kotchwar headed back to the main camp, and my dad and me felt some disappointment watching him leave, but this had happened before and my dad had gotten an elk, so we had hope. We made these horrible MRE like things for dinner and went to bed, feeling optimistic for the coming…

My view upon death penalty before watching the video about Darryl hunt’s case, was strongly against it. I truly believe that we have no say in who is to take someone’s life. Who are we to decide who lives or dies? There is no standard that we can place on someone’s life, to determine their existence in this world. Life is a precious gift, no matter how cruel the crime may be that the person being accused of committing the crime. I strongly believe that incarceration for the reminder of their life is in my view, the most extreme decision as a society to make in determining an individuals future.…

A young deer has strayed away from her herd and is innocently grazing on grass. Ten yards away, a hungry wolf pack slowly stalks toward the fawn after trailing her for days. The deer senses what's happening and darts away, but it's too late, the fawn is as good as dead. The snowy terrain works to the wolf's’ advantage, with their huge paws acting like snowshoes. The wolves advance as their strongest member leads the chase. The pups watch from the sidelines as the deer quickly tires out. The head wolf quickly latches on to the fawn’s nose and brings her to the ground. The deer thrashes as more wolves come and attack her. Not long after, the fawn gives up her fight and the wolves feast.…

Fortunately it was a foggy morning, and within half an hour the two were out of sight of camp and herd. As Pink had outlined the plans, everything was understood. We were encamped on a nice stream, and instead of trailing along with the herd, lay over for that day. Night came and our hunters failed to return, and the next morning we trailed forward towards the Arkansas River. Just as we went into camp at noon, two horsemen loomed up in sight coming down the trail from above. Every rascal of us knew who they were, and when the two rode up, Pink grew very angry and demanded to know why we had failed to reach the river the day…

Being one of my later hunts of the season, it was very cold. Nearing the end of the season I was anxious to finally get a deer, as we hadn’t even seen one all season. It was already a weird season so far: beginning with a strange heat wave, ending abruptly with a cold front. It had snowed the night before, only about an inch. We put our teeth (claws that help with traction) on the bottom of our boots, just to be safe.…

This is the start of what seemed to be just another original deer opener. Dad and I got up around five o'clock and we put all of our hunting gear on. We then grabbed our snacks and some Halloween candy. Now it is about five thirty and we are on our way to our deer stand, which is about fifteen minutes from our house. This year something felt different. As we were driving on the road we were almost to the deer stand and a ten point buck runs out in front of us. He started running right for our deer stand so we had to hurry up and get there. When we finally get up in the stand and got the heater turned on we are all situated for the long wait.…

Although, we soon realized this was not the case whatsoever. We walked around thirty yards and heard the snorting of the boar. “Guys, the boar is over there,” I said as I pointed towards a cave in the side of the ravine. “Ok guys listen up, the plan here is to have someone bait the boar out, and the other two of us ambush it from behind.” Said the Governor very confidently, as if he had done this multiple times…

Not only is hunting an exhilarating experience but so is the feeling of being surrounded by wilderness. During winter times since I was 12 years old, my father would take me out on long drives in the middle of winter to hunting sites just outside of Edmonton. What made the drive not seem so long was the scenic route we would always take. Every once in a while I would see little white rabbits hopping around and leaving miniature footprints all in the snow next to the road. Further down the road we would pass a fairly big hill that had two pine trees at the top of it. I always wondered how long they had been there considering the fact that they were over thirty feet high. Finally we would get to the hunting ground and make are way down to a little patch of brush where we would crouch and wait for the deer to pass by. The feeling of the cold snow crunching under my boots, the frost covered branches of the bush we were nestled under, and all the little footprints that surrounded us gave me a feeling of unity with nature. After hiding in our spots for a long while, usually until my feet and toes were completely frozen it seemed, my father would whisper “Here comes one right now”. A few moments later I’d hear a loud bang and we’d be back on the road with our trophy and bragging rights. We have carried on this tradition every…
