The Homeless System: A Case Study

When it was voiced that instead of Mary anointing Jesus’ feet with an expensive perfume, it would be better if it was sold and the proceeds given to the poor, Jesus made this statement, “For you have the poor with you always, and whenever you wish you may do them good” (Mark 14:7 NKJV). In context, it was not that Jesus was being insensitive to the needs of the poor; He promoted helping and caring for the less fortunate (Matthew 25:31-46). This statement is about a reality of the society. No matter how much we try, and what programs we instill, we will always have the poor among us.

Others would blame the greed of certain individuals or corporation why others lose their homes. Basirico et al. writes, “Merton recognized not all consequences of systems are functional—that is, they do not all lead to the maintenance of the system. Some lead to instability of the breakdown of a system. He termed these consequences dysfunctions” (2012, p.39). One becoming homeless can happen because of dysfunctions in our society. The landlord has to pay a mortgage on the property that he rents. Failure of the renter to pay the rent could result in the landlord losing his property and ruin his credit which affects his ability to care or his family. So, the renter, who don’t have a job, or whose income is no longer able to cover his living expenses, is evicted with no where to live. Such dysfunction is a part of the function of our society.
