introduction

The history came with the Greeks more than 2000 years before the appearance of Cinema that occurred between the late nineteenth and early twentieth-century historians of the time and just try to set the film as attractions of the fair. History and Cinema are two ways of conceiving the actions that seek to organize time recognizing him some feeling. Taking from the reality of their condition panoptic and chaotic, Cinema and History are building and redirecting hypotheses and testing possibilities and perspective. The similarity with what is characterized as experiences transform the cinema synonymous with the term "real-truth" and move history for a search of "reality" and "truth" of these facts or understanding of its representation, the intense demand for recognize these values across something that will impact the historic conservatism, and these issues are the subject of intense debates and discourses on historical reference source. The search for Cinema History was made so far to assign images only feature objects and not understanding that they are also subject, allowing Cinema and History addressing reality as two parallel: they are not.

Various sciences such as sociology, anthropology, and even philosophy extended the boundaries of his field of research and today we discuss about a model for

    Fernando Meirelles’s City of God (2002) has provoked critical discussion concerning its representation of the Brazilian working class since its release[2]. The film has been described as both disturbing and electrifying for its brutal realism and inspired cinematography[3]. Whilst it was eagerly received by critics the world over, others have film questioned its worth as a production for Brazil’s people. City of God became the focal point of a battle of representations concerned with the ‘real’ and the imagined working class society. Internationally distributed by American company Mirimax, many have accused Meirelles of fashioning a fetishized ‘tour’ of favela life and catering to Eurocentric stereotypes of a criminal black underclass[4]. Several Latin American commentators felt that distinctive aesthetic style of the film diminished what Ivana Bentes calls the ‘aesthetics of hunger’ in exchange for pure ‘cosmetic’ artistry[5]. In order to obtain an adequate understanding of the debate which surrounds City of God, it is essential examine various subjects. I firstly wish to obtain sufficient contextual knowledge of the modern favela in Brazil. The Cinema Novo movement similarly documents such issues as the poverty and the violence of the cangaço lifestyle addressed with in City of God[6].
