The Heroic Interventions In Homer's Odyssey
EPIC CONVENTIONS IN THE EPIC ODYSSEY

1. Have an INVOCATION

“Tell me, O muse, of that ingenious hero who travelled far and wide”

. The Odyssey recounts the adventures of the Greek hero Odysseus during his ten-year voyage home after the Trojan War. Homer begins with a one-paragraph invocation requesting the Muses to inspire him in the telling of his tale. Such an invocation was a convention in classical literature, notably in epics, from the time of Homer onward. In the invocation, Homer alludes to the heroics of Odysseus during the Trojan War. There, Odysseus fought valiantly and conceived the idea of presenting the Trojans a gift of a great wooden horse—a gift that resulted in triumph for the Greeks and death and destruction

He is the son of Poseidon.

* POSEIDON - He is the younger brother of Zeus and god of the sea and earthquakes. Poseidon bears Odysseus a grudge because he blinded his son Polyphemus. Because Odysseus has to travel home by ship, he is at the mercy of this god’s wrath. Despite the obstacles he puts in Odysseus’ path, he overcomes all these challenges and in doing so, Odysseus becomes a favorite of the other gods, and therefore Poseidon’s hatred of Odysseus mellows.

* SCYLLA- This is a six-headed sea monster that lives in a cavern in the Strait of Messina where there is also a whirlpool that drives ships within reach of her lair. She was once a beautiful sea-nymph who was loved by Zeus and Poseidon, but was changed by the jealous Circe into a snapping monster. She manages to kill six of Odysseus’ crew as he passes through the Straits. * THE SIRENS- These were beautiful sea-nymphs who charmed sailors by their alluring songs. Odysseus has to sail past these temptresses, and he has his men stop their ears with wax. He is bound to the mast so that he can hear their magical song without being lured

The Odyssey is an epic from the writer Homer in the 8th century. The Odyssey is a 20 year voyage of a man named Odysseus who was king of Ithaca. The first ten years of the voyage was a war Odysseus fought in called the Trojan War. Odysseus ended the war when he had the genius idea of creating a horse as a “peace offering” because he knew he could not beat the Trojans from the outside. The horse was hollowed out in the inside so Odysseus and his men could fit inside it. Once the Trojans brought the horse inside their gates, the men inside the horse waited until it was night to come out, then they slaughtered the Trojans while they slept so there was not as bad of a death toll. Odysseus thought this would be the end of his journey, but there…

So he quickly presumes putting beeswax into his men’s ears. As described by Homer, “I carved a massive cake of beeswax into bits and rolled them in my hands until they softened – no long task, for burning heat came down from the Helios, lord of high noon. Going forward I carried wax along the line, and laid it thick on their ears.”(Line 708-713) This shows how Odysseus continues to show his intelligence throughout The Odyssey. Odysseus’ bravery comes in when his punishment for staying in the Cyclops’ cave is too listening to the sirens song. He doesn’t get startled or chickens out so he commands his men too tie his up so there’s no possible way of Odysseus making the shop go towards the singing. Odysseus’ advises to his men what Circe had ordered him to do by saying, “Sirens weaving a haunting song over the sea we are to shun, she said and their green shore all sweet with clover’ yet urged that I alone should listen to their song. Therefore you are to tie me up, tight as a splint, erect along the mast, lashed to the mast, and if I shout and beg to be untied, take more turns of the rope to muffle me.”(Line 690-698) This displays how brave Odysseus is to listen to a song that tortures you because of how heavenly it sounds to a…

Odysseus and his men face these challenges when Poseidon’s son, Polyphemus, curses Odysseus and his men when Odysseus tells Polyphemus who blinded him. Because of this, Odysseus faces many decisive tasks ahead of his embarkment back home. When he lands at the island of the Lotus-Eaters, he saves his men and he forces them to stay on the ship. He decides to tie himself to a pole because he wants to hear the sirens, but he doesn't want his ship to go towards them. Odysseus goes through his road of trials when he is at the realm of Circe on the island of Aeaea (Hamilton 305). The road of trials is when the hero is beset by a series of tests, ordeals, or challenges, and is often aided by a supernatural aid or by an amulet or other magical device. In the realm of Circe, a group of Odysseus’ men were turned into swine, but luckily Hermes gave Odysseus an herb that would make him immune to her powers and because of his immunity, she fell in love with him and began to help them. His first achievement that proved his cunningness was during the Trojan War, where his idea of hidden men inside a wooden horse given to the Trojans as a present was taken into action, which ultimately, leads to their defeat and the fall or Troy. His second achievement was during his visit with Polyphemus. Being trapped inside the house of a man-eating monster, Odysseus had to devise a plan to make it possible for him and his crew to escape alive. Odysseus, being the clever man he is, tells Polyphemus that he is Nohbdy, feeds him wine, and then blinds him with a wooden spike. Trying to call out for help, Polyphemus opens the door to his home. “Polyphemus? Why do you cry so sore in the starry night? Sure no man’s driving off your flock? No man has tricked you, ruined you?” asked his brothers. “Nohbody, Nohbdy’s tricked me, Nohbdy’s ruined me!” cried the blind Cyclops and therefore, none came to his aid. Able to escape the horrifying giants’ land, Odysseus runs into even more problems. Sirens rest on the rocks of the sea, awaiting any ship that seems to sail along. They sing their song, in order to lure in men into their destruction. To avoid them as best as possible, Odysseus applies beeswax to his men’s ears so they are unable to hear the…

Odysseus was very witty because he came up with the battle strategy that ultimately let them win the trojan war. He created a wooden horse and hde soldiers in it to later attack. Odysseus set up a peace offering, which was the horse that help many soldiers,, they trojans accepted and believed they won the war. After a few hours after all the trojans celebrated and were very drunk, they came out of the horse, which was in the center of the town, and they attacked. They used brutal force and slaughtered many people. The Ithacan were ultimately victorious against the Trojans. Another display of wit was when he escaped from polyphemus, poseidon's son who is also a cyclops. Odysseus and his crew went into Polyphemus's cave and camped out for shelter. The cyclops was not happy and wanted to destroy and eat the crew members and Odysseus. Odysseus has to lose a few men to Polytmus by the cyclops eating the crew. Odysseus makes a plan to stab the cyclops in his eye and then claim hi name is Nobody, so when the cyclops calls out to his neighbors they believe that nothing is wrong. The plan works out flawlessly, except for when they left the island of the cyclops. When they left they left by boat to escape to another island and then ultimately back to Ithaca. The plan fell short because Odysseus was unaware that Polyphemus was Poseidon, the god of the seas, son. So, when odysseus and his crew left the island on boat and odysseus was boasting how he outwitted a cyclops, Poseidon heard and got angry because he had just injured his son. Odysseus also exemplified an epic character by his wit by listening to the sirens sing. Odysseus is the only person to ever be able to hear the sirens because he used his wit. By Odysseus placing bees wax in his ears he was able to listen to the sirens but not have to deal with the complications of him being dragged into the water ultimately dying. Odysseus exemplifies an…

Odysseus was a quick witted man at warfare because he was known for his famous wooden horse trick. He came up with the idea of the "Trojan Horse". But what was his plan? It was to get the Greeks to hide in the Trojan horse and have the people of Troy to open the gates so the Greeks would attack. In my opinion this is a very clever and outstanding idea. All of this lead his men to victory. Which proved that he was intelligent.…

This passage can be found in the beginning of The Odyssey in Book One, Lines 1-12. It’s significant not only because it’s how the epic begins, but also because it gives quick insight to Odysseus’ character and what happens on his way home. Odysseus is revealed to be a man “of twists and turns”(1) which gives the double meaning in the literal sense of his journey home and his cunning nature. In this case, The Odyssey follows the guideline of an epic as it states what the rest of the poem entails. The speaker asks a Muse to sing to him while he gets ready to tell the tale of Odysseus’ journey. He travels through “many cities”(4), suffers “many pains”(5), and it’s implied that he is the last of his crew to survive as the “recklessness of their own ways destroyed them all”(8). This shows that his perilous journey and hero-like features make him deserving of an epic. Also this opening foreshadows all that is to come later in the book with him trying to save his crew’s life from disaster, his crew being wiped out because of eating the cattle of the Sun, and Odysseus’ nearly impossible trip home. Another notable thing is that the Muse is allowed to “start from where [she] will”(12) and she does this throughout the epic by using flashbacks and swaps between the separate storylines of Telemachus and Odysseus.…
