The second example where Odysseus shows bravery is when he had to be tied to a chair to resist the song of the sirens. He showed bravery because he again, put his men before himself and remained loyal to the ship. No one could resist the song but luckily, he was strong enough…
Odysseus shows braveness in the passage The Cyclops. He had to get a big long stick so they could stab the Cyclops in the eye. He was very brave to stab the cyclops. Braveness is another quality of a heroic person.…
One would be right to think that Odysseus is hero because he is brave, strong, and smart, however he uses all his hero qualities for himself. To begin, Odysseus is a hero because he is brave. The text states,“‘Now!’…
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is brave five minutes longer.” In the book, The Odyssey, written by Homer, we follow a mortal named Odysseus through his journey home to Ithaca. Odysseus faces many obstacles along his way and the way he chooses to combat them may make him appear a hero. Despite his obvious heroic qualities, Odysseus is not the hero you once thought.…
From the epic poem by Homer, The Odyssey, Odysseus lack heroism presented in his actions. His success is due to the fact, he is able to intelligently apply himself in dire situations. However the majority of feats are unnecessary, as he tends to indulge in these predicaments due to his selfishness and curiosity. For example, at the time of Lotus Eaters, Odysseus sets course to the Lotus Eaters to discover who are natives of the island. His curiosity ended up of 3 of his men getting paralyzed and brainwashed by the Lotus Eaters.…
The external conflicts that Odysseus overcomes show that he is highly courageous. For example, the episode with the Cyclops proves he is clever because he tricked Polyphemus into thinking that his men were sheep. Another example of Odysseus' braveness was his encounter with the suitors. He was very strong and confident which caused him to fight the hundreds of suitors and win even though it was only he and his son against…
In Homer’s Odyssey, it is my belief that Odysseus is\ is not heroic mostly because (focus on one character trait). For example, (choose one example from story or movie that supports your claim).…
Odysseus is a hero. How is Odysseus a hero? According to Google, a hero is “a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.”. In the Odyssey, I saw Odysseus as a hero because he was patriotic, humane and dexterous and there are a few times I see these qualities in the Odyssey. In this essay, I will discuss how Odysseus revealed his valiant and lionhearted ways throughout his long-lasting, venturesome journey.…
To start, Odysseus was developed with standard Greek heroic traits. First, Odysseus was courageous in the face of opposition, as shown by his encounter with Charybdis and Scylla. The protagonist of The Odyssey commanded his crew to row onwards in the face of the monsters, showing his courage. He was also intelligent, as he devised a plan to escape the wrath of Polyphemus. Odysseus made the Cyclops drunk with his liquor before blinding him and allowing his crew to escape on the underside of the sheep of the island. Finally, the main hero of the story was perseverant, as illustrated when he left Ogygia, battled Poseidon’s storms, and made it to King Alcinous’s island.…
In today’s society many things can be considered as heroic. In the epic poem, The Iliad and the Odyssey by legendary Greek author, Homer. The main character is a war hero named Odysseus is very intelligent and really strong but is also portrayed as arrogant and at times a horrible leader at times but he is still a war hero nonetheless. What makes a hero a hero? The ancient poem The Odyssey, written by the epic poet Homer, tells the story of a man by the name of Odysseus and his travels home to Ithaca after being at war in the Battle of Troy for nine years. Odysseus encounters many challenges and obstacles through the many adventures that he faces on his way home. His challenge concluding the story is of finding a way to rid the suitors that pillage his kingdom in order to retrieve his position back as lord and husband to his wife, Penelope. As Odysseus went on many adventures, he displayed the qualities of cleverness, bravery, and vengeance.…
Movies, which show more and tell less, allow potential heroes to prove their heroism with actions and not words. Each movie that we watched for class showed heroism in a different way, much like the ancient Greek and Roman poems told about heroism in a different way. Partially a product of their time, each movie approached a World War in a way that reflected the values of their time, much like how Odysseus’s cunning was praised by the Greeks and condemned by the Romans. However, I think that the sequence of movies matches up quite nicely with the sequence of poems. Comparing The Grand Illusion to the Iliad, Saving Private Ryan to the Aeneid, and Inglourious Basterds to the Odyssey brings out contrasts, like the definition of heroism, between…

Now some people may say that Odysseus is a hero because he gave up his life to go and fight for other people’s freedom. However Menelaus said to Telemachus, “No one among our soldiers risked so much or had so much courage.”(Pg.39) he did not care about his family and all the people that he left behind, for this he is not a hero. But not everybody who goes to the war is a hero or that has that much courage.…
