In the Brothers’ Grimm fairytale, Rapunzel, the witch is seen as a horrible, evil character who takes Rapunzel away and locks her in the tower. However, the witch was actually good and she was protecting Rapunzel the best way she knew how to. First of all, Rapunzel should’ve stayed in the tower because the tower was protecting her, the witch was kind to her, and she was naïve. If she stayed in the tower, Rapunzel wouldn’t have ended up stranded in the desert with her babies for years and she would’ve been safe for the rest of her life. All of her actions showed that she was naïve and inexperienced. Lastly, nowhere in the story does it say that the witch was mean to her until Rapunzel disobeyed…

Disney princesses always depend on other people to solve their problems. Little girls who watch these movies think they don’t have to do anything for themselves. For example, Cinderella has a fairy godmother to help her go to the ball and meet the prince, the mice make her dress, and get the key from her stepmother to unlock Cinderella from the room upstairs. Then, in Sleeping Beauty the prince comes to save Aurora from her enchantment of sleep and the godfaries raise her in the woods. Also, in Snow White the dwarfs take her into their home and the prince kisses her to save her from the spell she is under. Some may say that these women did in fact need help. They argue that there is no way they could have gotten out of the situation without a little assistance. This is somewhat true, an example being that Snow White and Aurora couldn’t have been awaken from the spell without true love’s kiss. However six year olds don’t have the cognitive development to understand this. A six year old girl would wish for a fairy godmother or a prince to sweep her off her feet, neither of which will happen.…

Most Americans could say that they have at least heard of Cinderella and her fairy godmother. In the German Version of Cinderella, “Aschenputtel,” there is no Fairy godmother. In “Aschenputtel,” Cinderella’s mother tells her “Dear child, remain pious and good, and then our dear God will always protect you, and I will look down on you from heaven and be near you." Later in the story Cinderella asks her father to bring home the first twig that brushes his hat. When given the twig Cinderella takes it to her mother’s grave and it grows into a magnificent tree. Cinderella then prays under the tree and pigeons and turtledoves bring Cinderella anything she wishes. These birds represent Cinderella’s mother’s spirit watching over her poor daughter. Animals, such as birds and mice, also appear in the Disney classic, but are more aides then guardians to Cinderella. These animals are introduced as humorous instead of saviors in the Disney version. The animals help her clean the house and do chores. Later on they also are transformed into steeds and drivers to take Cinderella to the ball. These differences give each story its lighter and darker feelings and dynamics affecting the readers’ emotions towards the animals and Cinderella.…

It is not uncommon to witness poor portrayals of female characters in early fairytales. Whether it is a damsel in distress, wicked witches, evil stepmothers, it’s hard to think of a story without any of them. When it comes to a strong, heroic, male protagonist, it is just as common as showing a weak female antagonist. The Brothers Grimm did not fall short of this trend while writing “Hansel and Gretel.” “ Hansel and Gretel” have all three of the shameful female characters and the admirable male character.…

Hi, Duy. Thank you for sharing. I agree with you that Cinderella is Godmother archetypes. I would define the fairy is God Mother because she uses magic to help kind people like Cinderella. The stepmother and two stepsisters as the devil because they abused Cinderella. Also, they play villain characters in the story. The prince as the hero because he tried to find to find Cinderella. Moreover, I believe the fairy can also be the hero in this story because, witough her and her magic, everything in the story would not be change. Cinderella keeps the life that she had. Moreover, there are many another factor which significant in the story which are the crystal shoe and the pumpkin. Crystal shoe stands for beauty and purity. The pumpkin stand for…
