Tension between the Sultanate and the Janissaries sparked a Janissary revolt in Serbia in 1805. Serbian peasants helped to defeat the Janissary uprising and went on to make Serbia independent of the Ottoman Empire. Sultan Mahmud II believed that the loss of Greece indicated a profound weakness in Ottoman military and financial organization. Mahmud used popular outrage over the loss of Greece to justify a series of reforms that included the creation of a new army corps, elimination of the Janissaries, and reduction of the political power of the religious elite. Mahmud’s secularizing reform program was further articulated in the Tanzimat (reorganization) reforms initiated by his successor Abdul Mejid in 1839.…

The Ottomans controlled using a strong military, use of weapons, and an extensive bureaucracy. Their empire was known to be geared for warfare. The Ottoman empire had strong governmental power. They ruled in their center of Constantinople, which the Ottomans built defense walls around, aqueducts in, and was where they opened their markets. Absolute power was granted to their Sultans, such as Suleymon the Magnificent. Another unique political factor of the Ottomans was their use of Janissaries. Janissaries were Ottoman infantry divisions that were made up of boys that were legally slaves that were captured and forced to fight. They were extremely strong and beneficial to the Ottomans. The Safavids ruled under the control of a Shah, or emperor. Some of these Shahs were Abbas the Great, Tahmasp I, and Isma’il. A large part of the Safavid political control was their followers who were given the nickname “Redheads” due to their red…

Despite the fact that the Australian Imperial force in the First World War ought to have a reputation as successful fighting force, it displayed the worst disciplinary record away from the frontline when the compared with other authority forces and other British army. This paper will examine the relationship between the AIF indiscipline and the advantaged position they held of being the sole force impervious to the death penalty, with an exception of insubordination, disloyal activities, and absconding a rival. These activities influenced proportionally a high number of absentees and abandonments within the ranks of the AIF. The Australian government was reluctant to impose field punishment and impose penalties to hold their military forces accountable. There were instances of self-maiming or commitment of military crimes by those who wanted to avoid front line duties. This paper will explore various levels of indiscipline of AIF within the background of war on the Western Front and their disciplinary code of operation. That does not mean that other forces were fully disciplined. No, they were there, but AIF‘s indiscipline was stupendous and protected by their government.…

Yes, indeed throughout history, Rome ultimately exhibited a readiness to adapt its military tactics and strategy to successfully confront particular challenges. The Roman military was a highly organized institution. There was a straightforward system of rank, and a number of different splitting up of the basic unit. The entire basis of Roman infantry tactics was the idea that by keeping troops in arranges, one could fight more successfully. Most military commanders of the day simply had their troops rush passionately at the enemy, relying on better numbers, better soldiers, or luck to hold the day. The Romans realized that they could not always rely on these, so they turned to strategy. Each situation was wrapped up differently, taking into account land, the type and strength of the opponent's troops, and the type and strength of the Roman's troops. The Romans also thought that the best tactic would be the one that had the most effect without exposing the troops to unnecessary risk. One of them was to cut off their opponent from his resources. Armies run on their stomachs and equipment, and both require regular supplies. Without a stable supply of food and water, an army will starve or dehydrate killing or uncomforting the troops and they would fall apart. The Roman Soldiers would attack the resources themselves. When they conquered territory, they took as much as they could. This not only gave them more food, it prevented it from falling into their opponent's hands and they would also try to cut off the transportation so the amount of supplies that could reach the enemy was severely reduced. One of the most famous tactics that the Romans used was called “siege”. Siege was a military operation in which troops surround a place and cut off all outside access to force surrender. The Romans would typically build a wall around the existing city to help control the enemy. This wall would be built to prevent the enemy from escaping. The ongoing siege would eventually…
In my personal opinion, I think that the Generals assemblage was a great success. Many websites and a book that I have looked at said that the statue gives off a humorous feel than serious. Most serious sculptures would only depict one rider on a steed, whereas the Generals has two men (one being our country's Founding Father and the other Simón Bolívar, the political and military leader of Venezuela). It is also to be noted that the way the horse is depicted in the statue--it is very comical. Marisol did not take the time to carefully craft out a noble steed, but rather created it out of a barrel. The barrel was then mounted on legs that used to belong to a once ordinary table with wheels.…
1. The original Ottoman military forces of mounted warriors armed with bows were supplemented in the late fourteenth century when the Ottomans formed captured Balkan Christian men into a force called the new troops (Janissaries), who fought on foot and were armed with guns. In the early fifteenth century, the Ottomans began to recruit men for the Janissaries and for positions in the bureaucracy through a levy on male Christian children.…

1. I hesitate to use the word power because very few people actually wield power, most simply have authority, which is given to them by those with the power. Generally speaking, in my experience with the authority of upperclassmen in the corps has been positive, they use their authority to accomplish the tasks they are responsible for. Authority and Responsibility go hand in hand as one increases the other increases at the same rate. My personal relationship with authority is one where I have been able to view those who wield their authority well or poorly.…
The devshirme in Ottoman society became an important practice implemented to increase the manpower of the empire. Speros Vryonis goes into detail on the debate of when the devshirme and the Janissaries came to being, but I think there is more to take from this source. As Speros states, the creation of the devshirme is not entirely certain, but one cannot help to know that the Ottomans needed these children for a particular reason.…
Janissaries was also the similar group which worked for emperor. However, it recruited the children from 7 to 10 years old by devshirmes. They must be trained for more than 10 years and then they fight as the strongest and honestest army instead of doing dirty and heavy work in court. The reason why they are the honestest people was not only the ten-year train but also the agreeable reward. It seems that every officers, provincial governors even the vizier, one of the powerful jobs chose their generation from Janissaries. Such a considerable bonus was great enough to make Janissaries do their best for their lord.…
The Ateneo offers their entrepreneurial-oriented students a place where you can take part in a rare opportunity to set up your very own business establishment. This place is called the John Gokongwei School of Management Student Enterprise Center, or most commonly known as, the JSEC. However, only a few students are chosen to participate in this challenge. It’s a gritty process wherein you have to generate unique and non-mainstream proposals; because there are plenty of applicants and only 19 will be chosen and you also have to get an approval by the Dean’s Office of the JGSOM. Also, Just like every other official business, you have to secure business permits, pay taxes and rent, and provide salary for your employees.…
