The Elevator By William Sleator Analysis
“The Elevator”

Martin, a 12 year old boy from “The Elevator” by William Sleator, feels like a coward, has low self esteem, and always worries about things in everyday life. Martin isn’t the strongest, he isn’t very good at sports, and he gets bullied at school. In the story, Martins main problem is an old elevator at his new apartment. He is afraid of it. It only has room for three people, and it feels like it could break down at any moment. His problem gets worse when a creepy fat lady starts getting on the elevator when he is in it. All she does is stare at him, which creeps him out more. When Martin tries to tell his dad, his father acts like he doesn’t care at all. He does nothing for martin, and just tells him to grow up.

In the story Martin is not only afraid of the elevator, now he is afraid of the creepy fat lady. Martin asks his \father if he ever saw the creepy lady before. His father said no, so Martin tries to explain about the lady. All his dad did was shake his head and start arguing with Martin.

“You’re afraid,” said his father, “when are you going to grow up and act like a man? Are you going to be timid all your life?” After his father said that Martin went to his room and cried. This shows that the father doesn’t really care about Martin, and gets annoyed by him. He thinks Martin is weak

In the end of the story, it ends with the creepy fat lady and Martin on the elevator. She laughs and pushes the stop button, which makes me think she does something to Martin. We don’t know what happens next or what the dad did or how he felt. If you treat someone bad and then loose them, you will feel really bad. So always treat people the way you want to be treated. You never know when they will be

Unfortunately, we live in an era where traditional values of love and honor are being replaced with our own dreams so much that divorce is now a common word. Peter Meinke’s use of symbols in “The Cranes” gives the impression of being a simple love story of an old couple birdwatching while reminiscing on their life together, but in reality reveals the darker components of love.…
