The Double Helix Research Paper
The discovery of DNA: DNA was discovered in 1864 by Fredrick Miescher, but the main roles of DNA weren’t shown until 1943. Even though it was discovered way earlier, James Watson and Francis Crick did not find out the structure of the DNA until 1953. It was Called “Double Helix”. The Double Helix had two strands that would wind around each other as if it were a ladder. James Watson later wrote a book called, “The Double Helix: A personal account of the Discovery of the Structure of DNA”, which was published in 1968. Watson and Crick had to involve themselves in many other studies to aid them while they tried to figure out the structure of DNA. Some things they involved themselves in are the following: Genetics, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and X-Ray Crystallography. Both strands of a double-stranded structure keep the same exact biological information. That is why wen the wo strands separate the biological information is replicated. The two strands run in opposite directions and attach to a sugar and a nucleobase. The four nucleobases on the backbone encode biological information. In Eukaryotic cell’s DNA is organized into chromosomes. Chromosomes are long threads of DNA that consist of genes and regulatory information. Chromosomes duplicate in DNA replication, giving each cell their own chromosomes. The main 4 roles of DNA are, Replication, the Encoding of Information, Mutation and Recombination, and Gene Expression. Replication, or DNA Replication, is the process that DNA goes through to make two identical duplicates of itself. The Encoding of information process is how the DNA controls the activity in a cell and the growth of the organism. The encoding helps make proteins. Mutation and Recombination both end in genetic variations. Gene Expression is a process where our DNA is turned into a product, for example
