The Different Stages Of Light Sleep
Stage 1 “light sleep”. In this stage of light sleep, which lasts about 5 to 10 minutes our brains activity powers down by 50 percent or more, producing theta waves. Theta waves occur four to seven times per second. Moreover, these waves are slower than the beta waves of 13 or more times per second produced during active alert states and the alpha waves of 8 to 12 times per second when we’re quiet and relaxed. As we start to drift off to deeper sleep, we become more relaxed, and we may experience hypnagogic imagery (scrambled, bizarre, and dreamlike images that flit in and out of consciousness).

Stage 2. In stage two, our brain waves slow down even more. Sudden intense bursts of electrical activity called sleep spindles of about 12 to 14 cycles

    As we sleep we hit four different stages of sleep. The first stage is stage 1 EEG or initial stage 1 EEG which is described as a low-voltage, high-frequency signal that is similar to, but slower than that of alert wakefulness.     The stages of sleep are an example of an ultradian rhythm, repeating roughly every 90 minutes while asleep. Since the invention of the EEG in the 1930’s the research into stages of sleep has drastically increased. In 1968, Kales and Rechtschaffen discovered four distinct stages people entered during sleep. Stage 1 usually lasts for roughly 15 minutes at the beginning of the cycle and is characterised by slower ‘theta’ brain waves. Stage 2, lasting about 20 minutes is characterised by sleep spindles (bursts of high cognitive activity) and K-complexes. Following this is stage 3, which lasts for 15 minutes.
