Auther Miller uses stage directions to show how controlling and manipulative in the first act of 'The Crucible'. From the audience's first read of the play you can see immeadietley that she is deceitful, Miller says that she has "an endless capacity for dissembling". The word dissemble implies that Abigail is hiding her true opinions and affections. Also with an endless capacity for dissembling you begin to wonder whether you will ever see the true side or if she has been hiding her true personality for so long she has become her aliases.

Through Act 1, Auther Miller makes Abigail changes her persona a number of times. You never quite get to know her true character. In the beginning of the act she is almost portrayed as naive with words like "worry", "apprehension" and "propriety", shown in her stage directions is the phrase "quavering as she sits". However towards the middle of the act she says 'I'll beat you Betty' showing she is quite strident and relentless. From this moment on the audience are skeptical about whether Abigail truly cares about her cousin Betty or if it's just a false personality used to hide her true intentions.

In Act 1 Abigail admitts that she "did dance" and tells Parris "I'll be whipped if I must be" this indicates to the audience that she is a capable character, as for a girl/women to accept this type of punishment willingly would have been a great shock considering her age. It shows she is strong headed and determined to keep everything she did under wraps as she would rather be whipped for dancing then hung for witchcraft.

Arthur Miller uses Mass hysteria through Abigail mainly throughout the story. Abigail uses her emotions to pretend seeing spirits and lies about what others do. She does this strategically so that whenever she is the topic of discussion she can start to blame someone else of witchery instead of herself. This happens plenty of times, For example, when Mary Warren was being accused of witchery, the attention turned towards her so she turned it back to Mary by pretending there was a bird speaking to her in “Mary's Spirit” trying to hurt Abigail. This was a complete lie so that Mary was the one being accused of witchery instead of her. Another…

In the play, Abigail is only seventeen when the affair occurs. Being a young and naive girl, she mistakes the actions for love and expects John to leave his wife. When he rejects her, she takes matters into her own hands and tried to get rid of Elizabeth Proctor by using Tituba’s magic. When that fails, she blames Elizabeth and others in the town for using witchcraft. This only backfires because John becomes desperate to save his wife. Also, Abigail takes advantage of her friends and does not use witchcraft but still manages to control them. They all support and testify to Abigail’s claim. The play revolves around Abigail doing anything for his attention including being responsible for the death of many. Even though she is young, she proves she is smart enough to manipulate and bend a whole town at her will, control her friends and betray her only family all in the name of her love for John Proctor. Overall, Abigail portrays the same perseverance Elizabeth does for the one they love and are strong minded women refuse to…

She is so selfish she yells at people, threatens to beat people up, and wishes death upon them if she doesn’t get her way. In the beginning of the play all the girls should have told everyone what really happened when they were dancing in the forest. If that had happened none of the girls would have started to accuse any one of witchcraft. But since Abigail is so selfish she ruins an entire town by threatening people her friends so her reputation and her name do not get ruined. Abigail tells all of her friends “If anyone spreads the word about us doing witchcraft, I will come to your house and kill you.” I would not want that kind of friend if she threatens to kill me. All of sudden Betty gets up and screams out a window that Abby drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor! She also threatens Marry Warren to not tell anyone that she was in the forest with him or her. Miller portrayed Abigail’s character as influential, "…strikingly beautiful girl...” (8) yet highly malicious with an "…endless capacity for dissembling…" (8) which is specified in Act 1. This represents and gives the reader an indication instantly, that Abigail can manipulate people using her looks in such a way that they crumble. As the play advances this is brought to action, especially with various members of the Salem community like John Proctor and Judge Danforth. She seduces John proctor with her looks to fulfill her loss of a man figure in her life. Furthermore, she utilizes her attractive looks to take control over the court. Abigail’s manipulation of the girls misleads the court by shifting the blame away from her and towards Mary Warren and Elizabeth. Thus, Abigail’s false pretence shows that she holds enough authority to make others follow her in her deceit, even if it is reflected as a sin.…

Described as “a strikingly beautiful girl, an orphan, with an endless capacity for dissembling” (Miller 1219). This description gets more accurate as time goes on when she tries to be an innocent child who does nothing wrong but then accuses dozens of people of witchcraft, essentially sending them to their deaths. She cares more about herself then the saving of lives of innocent people. Completely self-oriented is the only accurate way to describe her, for she only cares for herself.…
