The Count Of Monte Cristo Analysis
The Count of Monte Cristo is a fictional novel written by Alexandre Pere Dumas in 1844. It was written in France and obviously the original book was in French. The book was published as a serial and was very popular when it first came out. It is considered an “adventure novel” and a “historical novel.” He covers many important happenings in French history. The book was written during the European Romanic Period (1800-1840) as such romance and emotion (vice adventure) permeate this book. A popular English translation was anonymously published in 1846. Another translation was made by Robin Buss in 1996.

He is about to marry a girl named Mercedes and become the Pharaon’s (a ship) captain because the former captain died. However he is accused of a crime that he did not do; and ends up in jail, where he then escapes, but then as he escapes by pretending to be a dead person, he ends up being thrown into the sea. He then escapes drowning and ends up in the island of Monte Cristo, where he finds a treasure. After that he goes back to Europe, where he is told by Caderousse about how he was being framed. He then gives Caderousse a diamond for telling him that. Then after several years, Edmund Dantes becomes the Count of Monte Cristo. He ends up in Italy where only his former fiancée recognizes him as Edmund Dantes. Nobody knows who the count of Monte Cristo is besides Mercedes and the Count of Monte Cristo himself. After that Edmund starts his revenge on those who framed him. He gets his revenge but realizes that he should have just forgave them those people since revenge did not make him any more happy and instead has turned him into a guy willing to destroy people’s lives. After his revenge, Edmund falls in love with another girl named Haydee and Fernand shoots

    One line that I thought was pure ingenuity from the author was when he wrote one-liners in this novel that seemed to foreshadow the oncoming events and add onto the theme of the story. One of these lines were, "Hatred is blind, anger is foolhardy, and he who pours out vengeance risks having to drink a bitter draft." This line was very powerful in the sense that it foreshadows the series of events that occurs within the book. Edmond Dantes, the main character of the book, was stripped of his innocence by 3 conspirators, which he had called friends, and was sent off to Chateau d'If, an infamous jail in which the worst criminals go. He miraculously escaped, became wealthy, and sought vengeance against these 3 men who had taken his youth and innocence and turned it into something horrible... the Count of Monte Cristo, the sly, vindictive, mysteriously wealthy character which everyone is humbled by because of his simple fashion and mystique. He speaks with his ex-fiance's son's friend, Franz, who warns Dantes ahead of time that everything that goes around comes around. This line means that if one seeks to have his revenge, he shall get the disadvantages of what he does. Dantes is still "blinded by hatred," and says that only the poor and inept may pay for their discrepancies, but the rich and clever are the ones that will always reap the benefits. He learns later on in the book that his theory was not veritable in any sense, for he had a great deal of remorse and regret for what he had done and wanted to punish himself. But Haydee, his loyal servant, had loved him greatly, no matter what he had done, and gave him a reason to live, a reason to seek penance from God through living and repent throughout his life. He found out that what his former friend had told him would be what he needed to hear in the end.…

    The Count of Monte Cristo is a very sourceful book with characters creating different and new identities. Fernand changes to Count de Morcerf during the time of Dantes' imprisonment, Mercedes changes to Countess de Morcerf after her marriage to Fernand, Cadderouse changes to M. Pilletin, Benedetto changes to Andrea Cavalcanti to disguise and murders Cadderouse, and last but certaintly not least Edmund Dantes with the various identity changes. Even though these characters names are just being changed or in Dantes' case, changing their names, this still means creating various identities. In every identity change, there is a different name or "alias" as some people call it, and with every name comes a different identity. Dantes had to create a different personality to go with each new character to keep himself disguised. Just like anyone else who may be popular, people feel the need to change their identities for many different reasons, some more commonly used than others. People who change their identities may feel the need to change their identity, because it lets you be someone different, it's unique, it defines who you really are or who you want to be, it allows you to hide or get away from yourself and others, and many other reasons. For these reasons or at least some of them, I feel that Dantes, the main character of this book creates a new identity so many times. The main reason I believe that he changed his identity so many times was to hide himself Edmund Dantes from the people he confronted.…
