The Boy In The Striped Pajamas Theme
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is about a boy and his family that move from Berlin to Poland, a young boy befriends a boy who lives on the other side of the fence, unaware he’s a Jewish Prisoner. Throughout the movie, many Catholic Social Teaching themes were depicted. However, the two Catholic Social Teaching themes that stood out the most are Respect for Human Life and Human Equality. Both themes deal with respecting others despite their race.
Respect for Human Life is human life at every stage of development, from conception to natural death, is precious and thus worthy of protection and respect. During the course of the movie, the Nazi soldiers place the Jews into a gas chamber to kill them and then proceed to burn them once they’re dead.

    The Schindler’s List is Steven Spielberg’s award-winning film which illustrates the profoundly nightmarish Holocaust. It recreates a dark, frightening period during World War II, when Nazi-occupied Kraków first dispossessed Jews of their businesses and homes, then forced them into ghettos and labor camps in Plaszów and finally resettled in concentration camps for execution. It is quite terrifying to think how far the Nazis were able to go with their murderous ideology. Which is the primary component of what makes the novel and film so nerve-wracking. It is difficult to imagine how an entire group that were so dehumanized by another group of people and were killed as if they were nothing but ‘bodies’ without minds or emotions. The film opens up with a close up of hands lighting a pair of Shabbat (Sabbath) candles, followed by the sound of a Hebrew prayer blessing the candles it sounds similar to the call to prayer for Muslims minus the embellished throaty notes. One of the only color scenes in the film, it quickly fades to black and white and brings us to our setting for the majority of the film. It is 1939 at the…

    The boy in the striped pajamas was a film of sadness that also educated me even more on the life of a camp inmate. I really liked the plot of the movie and how it centered on kids, who are innocent and don’t care about another’s race, religion, or ethnicity. I liked how the relationship of Bruno and Smuel developed and how they started hanging out by the fence all the time despite their completely different upbringings and experiences. One thing I found gruesome and horrible was the way they treated the Jews and how the Germans thought of them. It had to be included in the movie and I understand that but at some points, it hit me hard and made me understand even more what those people had to go through. For example, Pavel’s beating for innocently spilling a glass of wine shows how the Jews were treated like dirt and the horror they went through. I like how Bruno was not easily influenced by the propaganda his father brought upon him because he cared more about what a person was like and how they treated him, not because of race. I think this was a great choice of a movie by Mr. Ballenger because it showed what the Jews had to go through and gave me a perspective about how lucky I am. All in All, it was a great film that was very sad but is great for people to watch in order to learn about the dreadful life of the Jews during the Holocaust.…
