the boy in the striped pajamas
I disliked the movie The Boy in the Striped Pajamas because I found that it achieved the opposite of its goal and sent the wrong message across. The purpose of Holocaust movies is to inform the viewers of the abominable happenings of the Holocaust. At the conclusion of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, I found myself feeling bad for the German boy. Instead of portraying the cruelty of the Germans, the movie made me feel sorry for the German family, forgetting that they were responsible for much of the Jews pain and destruction. Throughout the whole movie, emphasis is placed on the fact that the German boy is trapped behind the cold walls of his house and unable to have a normal childhood. This unfortunate reality takes away much focus from the incomparable torture the Jews were going through. But not only do you feel bad for the German kid, you also come to feel bad for his father, who’s mourning bitterly over the death of his son, ignoring the fact that he has caused this exact pain to a mass race of people. The reason I dislike the movie so much is because, the attention is given to the German family, and makes you think twice, that maybe there was another side to the Holocaust. Instead of focusing on the death of millions of Jews, you find yourself grieving the death of the German child, losing focus of the reality of the situation. This is a failure in the attempt to educate the world about the truths of the Holocaust.

How can two best friends simultaneously be enemies? John Boyne answers this question in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. He writes a tale about a Nazi commandant’s son who befriends another boy. They soon become best friends. Everyday Bruno the commandant’s son, visits Shmuel, a concentration camp inmate. Since Bruno’s father works for Hitler and Shmuel and his family are trapped by Hitler, this makes things difficult on the boys. Instead of being able to play with each other, like Bruno wants, they are separated by a fence. Bruno and Shmuel have these secret meetings every day and Bruno’s mother is also having secret meetings. However, her meetings are with the young lieutenant who works for Hitler. Although this is not clearly stated in the book, one can infer that she is having an affair with the man. Eventually, the commandant sends the lieutenant away. After a while of visiting each other Bruno learns that he is moving. As a last adventure, the two devise a plan that involves Bruno crossing the fence. When Bruno finally crosses, a herd of Nazi army officials rush a group of Jews and Bruno into an air tight room. He is only nine-years-old so he is clueless about the…

This film takes place during the time of WW2. It shows how some families didn’t even know what their husbands were doing in the war. It also shows what goes on in their homes and how the soldiers treated the Jews. Also near the end it depicts the inside of the camp. It shows that the Jews really didn’t know what was going to happen to them when they went to go get gassed.…

The story gives a more broad image about the Holocaust. Showing you that you may have been going on with your day and everything thing turns downward in an instant. The movie shows more about the concentration camps and what life is like inside the fence. Including the work that was forced upon them, the punishments that were received for escaping, what happens if you can not handle the camp, etc. They both also express the fear factor of what people feel in the camps. Considering people constantly feared the thought of losing their family and friends. The book is known as Devil’s Arithmetic by Jane Yolen and the…

The perspective was viewed from the family of a German soldier's family. The concentration camps graphics were accurate, as well as the Jews that were contained in the camp. It shows the dirtiness and famine among all of the prisoners. The way the prisoners were treated, especially showing how superior the Germans were was shown often in this film. They treated the Jews with little to no respect which is accurate compared to the past.…

But, that doesn't mean that we should continue making films about the same subject; the Holocaust. Some films can lighten the mood of the Holocaust by adding light situational under tones such as romance. By adding something along the lines of this to the existing horrific mass murder murdering scenes the Audience will be touched by the couple kissing in the middle of all of the chaos, while learning more about the Holocaust. Maybe if the Holocaust films were told by the perspective of the imprisoned Jew then the films would be worth the making. But that will never happen since the point of view is too horrific for the innocent public…

The entire movie is in black and white and the music that goes along with is unexplainable. The tone of it plays on the viewers' emotions. Schindler's List is not your typical movie. Most movies contain humorous parts or even emotionally uplifting parts, however Schindler's List is totally the opposite. After sitting through this movie for about three hours, we almost felt sick to our stomachs, not only from the emotional scenes, but also from the graphic ones.…

The film is based on the memoirs of Wladyslaw Szpilman, this is a true story of what this man went through during Hitler’s reign. I feel like the plot of this film immediately sets it up to convey the information in a factual but emotive way, although because it is a memoir it also leaves it open to withhold a lot of information that might not be know and because they didn’t want to make parts of the story up they left the audience with quite a few unanswered questions.…

Hundreds, even thousands, of people died thinking that they were inferior to others because of the way they were born. My heart goes out for all the people that died during the Holocaust, and to all of the families that lost a love one. Nobody knows what it feels like unless they went thought it themselves. When reading Night the pain that the people went through is sad enough to make anybody want to take back the actions of the Nazi's.…

Themes like intolerance, the discrimination against Jewish people, and the will and strengths that these people had to survive. Most of this discrimination against the Jewish people came from the Nazi soldiers, but not all Nazi soldiers were ‘evil’, some were just doing what they were told with fear of being turned against if they didn’t. Some other texts of this genre explore whether or not everyday Germans had a full understanding of what was going on and weather or not they did anything about it. These issues can be seen in ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’. We see a lot of hatred towards the Jewish people through characters like Lt. Kotler and Adolf Hitler, and we also see a lot of evidence of the German people being unaware of what was going on. For example, Bruno asks Shmuel if he played “Football for example. Or exploration”. This identifies Bruno’s lack of knowledge of what went on in the concentration…

Schindler’s List has fairy tale like characteristics but is still a very powerful movie which touches many people in many ways. The drama used in this serious film was appropriate but others may debate it is not. The shower scene is a very controversial scene but still an emotional scene. Schindler’s List did successfully “de-sacralizing the taboo on imagining the Holocaust” which allowed a pathway for other Holocaust films which pushed the boundaries on what happened in death camps such as Son of Saul (2015) directed by László Nemes and a well known The Boy in Striped Pyjamas (2008) directed by Mark Herman.…

Watching Schindler’s List, for me, was a heart-wrenching ordeal that brought an entirely new perspective to the holocaust event. While it is more easy to be detached from facts and figures, it is difficult to not feel the emotion of the real people, adults and children alike, who whose lives were devastated by the events of the holocaust. The black and white footage of Schindler’s List did not diminish the amount of emotion that the film brought out in the audience, and in fact probably added to the dramatic effect, especially in the case of the little girl with the red coat. I do not remember ever crying so much during a movie in my life. This scene was, for me, so painful because I could not imagine the mindset that would drive one group of humans to act so brutally to another.…

    Night and Fog

I must say that this film is very traumatizing. There are some images in this film that will be burned and scarred into my mind for as long as I live. I have seen many holocaust films, but no one was as near as dramatic and depicting as Night and Fog. However I did like the theme of this movie. It is very sad but yet realistic. Our minds are murky and dull. We tend to only remember the important situation in our lives. Yet we don't remember the importance of our own history. I say OUR history be cause we all are human beings on this earth. Whether we believe in Allah, Jesus, Jehovah, or whatever higher power, we are all one race, and that the human race. It is very sad to know that human beings were treated and slaughtered just because of an ideology of superiority complex. Al though the Jewish people were massacred I learned that we must always keep a sense of hope in order to assure our own survival. When I saw in the movie the moments where there were journals that read about favorite foods and important dates, my heart was filled with sadness. Not because these victims didn't have this to eat but because of the false illusions that they had to dream in order to stay sane.…
