The Blame Game- The Deaths of Romeo and Juliet
In the story of Romeo & Juliet, Prince Escalus promises that, “Some shall be pardoned, and some punished” for the suicide of the couple. When Prince Escalus finds the bodies of Romeo, Juliet and Paris at the tomb site, he states, “All are punished”. He feels that this event will scar the people of Verona forever. He states to the people that the suicide is punishment for the ongoing feud between the couple’s families. He proposes that Friar Laurence may be vindicated in his involvement of the deaths after reading the letter but the outcome for the Nurse and other people are still doubtful. Those people should be held responsible, even if their intentions for the couple were good or bad. The Nurse, Friar Laurence, The Apothecary, The Prince Escalus should all be punished. However as indicated earlier, Friar Laurence may be pardoned on the basis of the information contained in the letter. Romeo, Juliet and Tybalt should also be included as playing a part in the couples’ death but because they are already deceased; the Prince cannot pardon or punish them any longer.
The Nurse was Juliet’s caretaker, friend and counselor and should be pardoned. She believed in the power of love that Romeo and Juliet shared and wanted nothing but happiness for Juliet. . The Nurse knew about the secret marriage of Romeo and Juliet and did not tell her boss, Lord Capulet. She knew that she would be in trouble for keeping this huge secret. When Romeo was kicked out of Verona for killing Tybalt, The Nurse suggested that Juliet marry Count Paris, who is the man her parents selected to be her husband. Juliet was upset at The Nurse’s statement and in turn was a factor leading to Juliet’s

He was a horrible leader of Verona. He let the feud between Romeo and Juliet families get out of control when he had the power to put an end to their fighting. He was the cause of so many people dying under his leadership. He always would throw around his power; make empty promises and empty threats. He only punished Romeo by kicking him out of Verona for killing Tybalt, who is Juliet’s relative. Romeo killed Tybalt because he killed his best friend Mercutio who happens to be a relative of the Prince. When Prince Escalus finds out about Romeo and Juliet suicide, he is very upset and blames himself for not being a stronger leader to his

I believe that Friar Laurence is to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Friar Laurence was the one that gave Juliet the potion that made her appear dead, therefore misleading Romeo and causing him to kill himself. Friar Laurence says “Take thou this vial, being then in bed, And this distilled liquor drink thou off; When presently through all thy veins shall run A cold and drowsy humor; no pulse, no warmth, no breath.” When Friar Laurence was figuring out this plan he could had come up with something safer or a backup plan just in case something went wrong. He also should had thought of the pros and cons of this plan before he went through with it because he was faced with a huge problem when the plan could not get through to Romeo and…

The world works in mysterious ways. Every day, people pass away and a lot is never explained. Deaths happen all the time where the story is not fully shown. People consider who’s at fault for a death like murder, however an accidental death or sudden death can never be completely accidental. Many factors are tied to a death and people or things could have influenced it. In the play Romeo and Juliet that takes place in Verona, Italy, two star-crossed lovers are found dead, both by suicide. This is at the fault of many characters. However, Friar Lawrence is most at fault. He did not try to resolve the feud that was between the Capulet and Montague families, even though they both trusted him. But the most blamed would be Friar Laurence. Friar Laurence was the wise adviser to Romeo and Juliet. He kept all of their secrets and helped them be together. He married the two lovers knowing the consequences, but hoping the marriage would end the two families feud. He was the one who came up with the plane for Juliet to take a sleeping potion and be in a seemingly dead state for 42 hours. But before he gives her the potion he replies with: “If, rather than to marry County Paris, Thou has the strength of will to slay thyself; Then it is likely thou wilt undertake A thing like death to elude away this shame, That cop'st with death himself to scrape from it; And, if thou darest, I'll give thee remedy.” (IV i 71-76). Then he wrote the letter to Romeo telling him the plane, but the letter never got to Romeo. After he is in the…

Marrying the two lovers, possibly for his own agenda, creates a problem that eventually turns fatal. When analyzing the words of Shakespeare a conclusion can be drawn that Friar Lawrence married the two for his own ego, hoping to bring an end to the Capulet-Montague feud. The second strike is the failed plan of talking to the prince about Romeo’s banishment. Before the wedding between Paris and Juliet, Friar plans to convince the prince to remove the banishment and have Romeo return to Verona. With this outcome, the lives of many may have been pardoned. He never gets around to it though, and the wedding plans proceed. The final strike is trusting in another man to deliver an important message which was promised a delivery. Friar places his trust in Friar John, who fails to deliver the plan to Romeo due to a sickness. As Romeo does not receive word of the plan (Juliet will fake her death and Romeo will come and the two will run away) he believes his love is actually dead. As Romeo rushes to the tomb, the Friar does as well, only arriving a moment too late to find a weeping Juliet, a murdered Paris, and a poisoned Romeo. His incompetence and sheer unwillingness to think about the consequences of his actions, are equally to blame for the young lives lost as the poison and…

When she becomes aware that Romeo yearns to marry Juliet, she heads back to tell Juliet the good news. When she returns, her old age and aching bones catch up with her, and she needs a minute to catch her breath, which Juliet disregards and arrogantly pries Romeo’s answer out of her. This shows the Nurse’s care for Juliet because she goes out of her way to speak with Romeo. The Nurse demands respect or else she will not tell her the news. She states that Juliet makes a simple choice by choosing Romeo. The Nurse refuses to refrain her anger about Juliet’s decision. She believes Juliet should marry Paris. Her disappointment is clear when she says, “Well, you have made a simple choice; you know not how to choose a man. Romeo? No, not he” (Shakespeare Act 2, 1084). The Nurse grows angry due to Juliet’s lack of respect, and she thought it was the appropriate time to tell her that she disapproves of Romeo for her husband. In her eyes, Paris will always remain as the best future husband for Juliet. She dislikes where events lead, and she knows she stumbles into a bad predicament. Later on, Juliet apologizes to the Nurse, who replies with the news to her saying, “Then hie you hence to Friar Laurence’ cell; there stays a husband to make you a wife”(Shakespeare Act 2, 1085). Although the Nurse desperately wants Juliet to marry Paris, she continues assisting their marriage to satisfy Juliet. The Nurse feels like her job revolves around Juliet’s happiness. The two marry and things really begin to escalate from…

Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is a tragedy about two young lovers, whose passionate love is ended by the fated death of both parties. The sad conclusion of their young love is also caused by many others besides the protagonists Romeo and Juliet; some shall be pardoned; while some shall be punished. Juliet’s beloved mother-figure- the Nurse, does not deserve the audience’s scorn. Friar John, the Franciscan monk who plays a part in the death of Romeo, should also, be forgiven. Friar Laurence and Capulet, on the other hand, have many faults that contribute to the end results, of which I will discuss further.…
