The Battle Of Corregidor In The Philippines
Introduction
World Wars, Battles, or even Civil Wars are very devastating and it just shows how much the people love their country or just how much they want to conquer that country or maybe how much they want independence. Like here in the Philippines, we have some different battles. I would love to talk about the Battle of Bataan and I find it most interesting, but there is something that is very vague and common about it. I thought about something that really interested me and it came to my mind, “How about Corregidor?”
Corregidor contains beautiful, although not always closely connected, maps and photos that all testify to this history. And because of its location, this made the island a military warfare. It showed how important and meaningful

It used to alert Manila of a home coming galleon where they make special signals as to lit bonfires. Soon then they made a lighthouse on this island. After the defeat of Spain, the island was designed as a U.S. Military Reservation in 1907. The big guns of Corregidor in 1941 were supported for the American and Philippine soldiers who were defending in Bataan until Japanese invades the island itself.

II. Defenses of Corregidor War in 1898, the Philippines became the center of attraction to the Japanese. We were like a gateway to Asia. If Japan gets us, Japan may have the opportunity to rule all over Asia. And America is aware on what was happening. Corregidor was also the center U.S. Military efforts. They grasped it for they knew they would need this island soon. While Manila as our capital city, we needed to protect it, too.

A. Why is Corregidor a strategic Island?

The rock rising out of the water in the mouth of Manila Bay shows one of the important defenses of the capital of the Philippines. It has a great location where it can actually protect the naval ships to enter from Manila Bay. The location is perfectly placed when you enter Manila Bay. It is show that we can protect our capital city by using Corregidor as a military

They started adding tunnels, artilleries, huge calibers, and many other military defenses. They were huge and heavy artilleries that were constructed in Corregidor. Huge weapons installed with huge amount of money that can help defend our capital city. These are some of the artilleries in Corregidor:

1. Battery Way
This was settled in 1904 and completed at 1914. It can destroy thin deck armors of the warships. It can also hit enemies that are in highlands of Bataan. To fire this, you needed about 14 men to carry its mortar.

2. Battery Hearn
This was settled at 1908 and completed in 1921. This was capable of firing in any direction. This gun was concentrated in different places. The first placed it focused was at Cavite (in February 1942) and then focused soon at Bataan (in April 1942). It was also intact with the Japanese after Corregidor fell and it was repaired.

3. Battery Geary
This was settled in 1907 and completed in 1911. This also can go through any direction and this is the “most effective-personnel”. It only needs 4 men to carry its mortar.

The overwhelming firepower, tactics, and maneuverability from the Field Artillery in the Battle of Palo Alto led to the defeat of the Mexican Army. Maj. Samuel Ringgold developed a carriage mounted 18 pounder siege cannon that was far superior to the Mexican Army’s heavy non-mobile guns (Sanchez, 2017). The Americans also used the 1841 6 pounders which weighed only 650 pounds and was extraordinarily easy to maneuver with oxen and horses ("Steel Cannons," n.d.). The 6 Pounder was also capable of firing three rounds a minute at 1500 feet per second with a maximum effective range of 1000 yards ("Military Factory," 2017). Nevertheless, these weapons were far superior to any of the small arms of time. Many of the small arms used took far too…

Americans succeeded in adding rifling to existing artillery pieces in early 1861 as they tasked for re-boring and rifling the old smoothbores to be compatible with new ammunition being industrialized. In order to be accurate the projectile needed to engage the rifling but still must remain small enough to load from the muzzle during battle. This was reached in diverse ways, which fall into three major classes: expansion - where a ring or cup of soft lead or copper expanded at the rounds base by the gases at firing; forcing cone - where the rear of the projectile (paper-Mache, lead ring -iron cup) was forced toward the front, expanding a band of soft metal into the rifling; and shaped - where the projectile was the same shape but a smaller diameter, and had ridges or flanges which fit into the rifling (Melton, 1994). A very famous howitzer of the civil was Whistling Dick. An eighteen-pound confederate siege and garrison weapon.…

The U.S Navy’s Asiatic Squadron, is headed by Commodore George Dewy. He is based in Hong Kong, China. His job is to combat the Spanish in the Pacific (Bowman 104). Amazingly the U.S had so little information about the Philippines that Dewey had to buy charts of Manila Bay from Hong Kong (Golay 22). In the early hour of May 1, 1898, Dewy spots the Spanish fleet 5 miles south of Manila. The U.S fleet sails towards the Spanish fleet (Bowman 107). Dewey’s ships have destroyed the majority of the Spanish fleet and captured the remaining Spanish fleet. The Spanish lose more than 400 men. Only 6 Americans die or are wounded. When word reaches America of Dewey’s victory he becomes a national hero (Bowman 107). Dewy stays in Manila harbor with his fleet to keep the German Navy from the weak situation in the Philippines. The U.S does not want Germany to take territory or resources from the Philippines (Bowman 107). Following Dewey's victory, Manila Bay was filled with the warships of the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Japan; all of which outgunned Dewey's force. The German fleet of eight ships were in Philippine waters to protect German interests acted provocatively cutting in front of American ships, refusing to salute the United States flag, taking soundings of the harbor, and landing supplies for the besieged Spanish. The Germans, with…
